| 1165058 | 2010-12-29 04:07:00 | most cars from the 90's onwards have fairly good rust protection but rust always wins in the end. Darker coloured cars always rusted less than lighter colours, much more evident in the days before quality paint jobs and rust protection. The reason is simple, dark colours absorb more heat and tend to dry much faster. Red cars always traditionally discolour the most, I suspect because they are at the wrong end of the spectrum and don't reflect much UV. So my advice is buy a black, dark blue, or purple car... hehe |

Red cars, and some shades of blue apparently discolour because the pigments used are more susceptable to UV induced fading. Dark coloured cars indeed both absorb more heat and infra red than light coloured cars, this can cause a breakdown in the materials used in seats and interior trim, accelerating fabric fading and disintegration. When I was with Nissan, we placed a thermograph on the backseat of a new car in the stock compound, it was painted "Coalfire Red" a deep dark red. (The windows had a white semi- reflective coating on them). At 3pm the hotest part of a summers day, an internal temperature of 154C was recorded inside the car. Car manufacturers try to use materials for trim that will stand-up for 6-7 years, is they will be great during the period of warranty, and at the age the average second owner disposes of the car. Why so short , the third and subsequent owners are unlikely to be in the market for a new car, so problems they have with trim failure are not likel;y to affect sales. The car is fast devaluing consumer item, and apart from exotics can not really be considered a long term asset. In Europe such models as Volvo, Mercedes and BMW are considered to have an economic life of 9 - 11 years. The fabrics and vinyls used for interior trims are adversely affected by such high temperatures. Another downside of dark colours is that they look smashing when clean and polished, and look dirty so much more than lighter colours. There are not too many car buyers who will twice buy a new black car, especially in a hot dry dusty climate. |

I like the look of this car. I thought it would be perfect for driving up and down Dee Street in Invercargill on a Friday night then I remembered I am no longer a young fellow. Alas pity about the price. |
