1164936 2010-12-26 23:29:00 NOT FOR ME. I would never own one myself, nothing against them, just I don't want one myself, happy with my Nokia and iPod Touch. A good friend has been wanting one for forever. I don't know what exactly for but I have been looking into buying one for them.

So far what I have come across is next to no one sells them. I don't want a parallel imported one, if it was for me I would happily get one from the US and unlock it myself but as it will be a gift I can't really do that. Apple, Vodafone and TradeMe seems to be the only places to find them. Ideally it needs to be brand new.

Now the only thing I'm not too sure on is whether to go 3gs or the 4. 4 seems a whole lot better (minus the imo uglier design) but is it really worth the extra money that I really already can't afford? I found a BN 8gb 3gs on TM for $750 which seems to be the cheapest I've found so far. Cheap or nah?

And before the whole "get a xxxxxx instead" comes in, again it's not for me, I don't really care how it works or how good/bad it is, this is what she wants and I can't go get a Nexus One instead.

And just double checking, you can buy a vodafone one and stick a XT sim in it?

1164937 2010-12-26 23:36:00 I think your options as you have found are vodafone or telecom shops, will you need to get the sim as well gary67 (56)
1164938 2010-12-26 23:47:00 Yes, you can buy a Vodafone one and stick an XT SIM in it - quite a few people at work have done precisely that. 3G works great since the AT&T frequencies which the iPhone is designed for are the same as the XT network.

Note the reason you're having difficulties finding sellers is that there are very few official resellers who are allowed to sell the iPhone. Apart from buying direct from Apple, Vodafone, or a handful of other distributors you're kinda stuck.

Yes, JB HIFi have them, but you have to also buy a Vodafone contract. If your friend is on XT (and happy there - no reason not to be), JB is NOT the way to go.

My 32GB 3GS is still going strong on XT (I wasn't allowed to sell it after I foolishly suggested to SWMBO might like to play with it for a week or so, before I stuck it on Trademe). So now we are a two-smartphone-family, 3GS and Nexus One.

Your options to buy one new and unencumbered by a term contract are limited to Apple (they come from Sydney - take about a week) and Vodafone.

My cousin has a 3 and my dad has a 4.

My dad bought his in the US. He had to cut up his simcard to fit it in... No such issue with the iP3...

The iPhone 3 was much slower than the 4, very noticeable, but I played around with the iPhone 4 before the 3, so it might just be me.

Multitasking is good. Had constant issues with the iphone 4 dropping my wifi.
Also, Telecom were offering 500$ (could be 600?) credit if you switch to their network with an iphone.
So I assume you could get a proper sim card that fits off them.

Cutting up the sim is easy enough...

1164945 2010-12-27 07:02:00 You can buy iphone 4's outright from JB Hifi (I think) Noel Leemings (I know - but based on stock levels) and from Apple.co.nz.

I bought mine from apple. As a first time iphone buyer I waited for the 4th interation for the features I wanted.

For longevity, get a 4 as they should run for about 2 years before they start bein a bit behind the OS (like the 3G is now) the 3gs is still ok, but I reckon it will be fairly crap in IOS5.

Outright, they're about $1100 for the 16gb and $1250 for the 32Gb. You can also still buy a brand new 3GS 8GB for about $919.
