1200338 2011-05-08 06:27:00 Hi,

I'm trying to extend my windows 7 partition from 50GB to 167GB . I have 117GB of free space in disk management . I got this free space from shrinking my XP partition . (See screenshot) . When I right click on Windows 7, the extend volume option is greyed out . But when I right click on XP, I am able to extend the partition .

How can I extend my windows 7 partition?

I have read that I need to change the free space to unallocated and then extend the partition . How do I do this?

Thanks :D

1200339 2011-05-08 06:38:00 When I've had these sorts of problems I've copied one partition (say XP) to a backup drive, then deleted it from the working drive. This then gives plenty of contiguous free space that you can extend the Win 7 partition into.
Then you can move the XP partition back from the backup drive into an appropriate space at the end of the enlarged WIN 7 partition.

Having a spare hard drive that you can clone your working drive to saves an awful lot of angst if things don't work out as planned.

1200340 2011-05-08 08:31:00 You need to move the XP partition so that there is free space after the Win7 partition.
You would be better off using Gparted off a bootable CD.

Get a proper Partition Manager.

www.partition-tool.com

It will make life easier and it's free.

You have but it is not directly after the Win7 partition.

You are better off using one that will run off a bootable CD and the free one above doesn't.

1200345 2011-05-08 09:51:00 With a proper Partition Tool/Software, you have to move the XP Partition to the right, this will then move the current blank to the left, directly after the W7 - then you can extend W7 into the free space.

X2 with what Mike says, bootable CD would be better.

You will be safer also, to do one operation at a time - Eg: Move the XP Partition, action it, reboot, make sure every thing loads OK, then extend the W7 partition.

Why, exactly, do you have to have one that runs off a bootable CD?

It's because doing it under Windows means you are using the partition that the partition manager is trying to work on so there is a greater chance of a stuff up.
