1199667 2011-05-05 11:31:00 We have a 5 year old HP DX7200 which my dad uses for emails, web surfing, excel, word, etc... But it is running very very slow ever since. Reinstalled OS but still slow performance. It's got 1.5GB ram and running XP home. It gets past the splash screen then slows down just when opening the internet browser.

So, Am I able to upgrade the CPU to a Core 2 Duo for some better performance?
It's currently got a Intel Celeron D running at 2.7ghz. The motherboard according to this site: h18000.www1.hp.com is a Socket 775 (LGA775). I want to spend around $85 for the CPU. Maybe I could get a deal on this: www.trademe.co.nz

So any ideas whether I can upgrade the CPU?

Thanks in advance.

1199668 2011-05-05 11:44:00 According to this

h30499.www3.hp.com it doesnt support core 2. So, if you want core 2,you'll have to replace the CPU and mobo. And probably the case and PSU. If the new mobo doesnt fit in the case

I'd start with Memtest and a look at the HDD SMART status.

(3.4-GHz, 2x2MB L2 cache, 800-MHz FSB)

Think these are the first generation Dual Core

Check your Board first

Did something similar to an EVO,1.8 Celeron to a P4 2.8,very worth while for under $20

+1.

1199672 2011-05-06 01:00:00 It's not a great pc but for the uses you list it should be adequate. It won't be great at multitasking so try not to overload it with software and stick to one task at a time and it should be ok. A RAM upgrade might actually be more beneficial than a CPU one if you can find it cheap.

Myself I wouldn't spend much on it as nothing will really make it all that great, the dual core pentium D's even if you can get one cheap weren't all that great at multitasking anyway. I seem to remember the single core hyperthreading CPU's out performing them.

And as mentioned already, if it's no better after a reinstall maybe you have hardware issues (Did you wipe the patition and do a clean install or just installed over top of the old one??). Generally windows never feels faster than a freash install.

1199673 2011-05-06 02:36:00 Upgrading a CPU is usually a waste of time & money.
Unless you are a gamer or need alot of CPU speed, CPU isnt usually the bottleneck(unless its a 1.6Ghz on Vista )
The PC spec is more than adequate. About the same as what Im using now(mines even older)
You have other issues.

I have seen some PC's that grind to a snails pace due to Hard Drive faults
Problem is all the usual HD tests will pass, incl smart. Only test is to replace the HD & see.

or..
CPU may be stuck in power saving mode, disable power saving in Win (Check the bios). Check what speed its actually running at in Win.

DX7200, is that about the era of the rampant BAD CAP issues ??

In all cases like that I have seen, SMART has always shown an indication of problems.

High reallocated sector count is what I've seen the most, but there are other things you can look for as well.

For example, I had a 120GB Maxtor (which ran OK) where Speedfan noted an abnormality with 'Throughput Performance' - a couple of weeks later the drive died with the tick of death.

But I definitely don't put any faith in Seatools - it generally won't fail a drive unless flames are coming out the back...

Pretty much everything has bad capacitor issues...

1199675 2011-05-06 07:20:00 Okay, Ill run those HDD tests and Memory tests.

Can I put this processor in for about a 20-30% Speed/performance boot?
