1165256 2010-12-28 10:07:00 When playing back some DivX files on my Panasonic DMR-BW850, they are squashed vertically.
The same files played on a friends Samsung TV playback fine.

Anyone have an idea why?

1165257 2010-12-28 10:11:00 what do you play them through on the samsung? GameJunkie (72)
1165258 2010-12-28 10:14:00 Try having a look at aspect ratio on your DVD remote ... then on your TV. I have Panasonic DVD (older model) & Samsung Plasma ... sometimes I have to change the aspect ratio on the DVD player .. . other times on the TV ... Usually "Just Scan" mode on the TV does it.

If you mean that the files play Ok on your friends TV OK through you DVD player ... then it's the TV settings.

What type of TV do you have ?

1165259 2010-12-28 10:17:00 The Samsung TV plays them off a USB Hard Drive plugged into its USB port.
It is a feature of the TV that it can playback DivX.

Also it is not a problem with my TV.
The problem is with the Panasonic.
It must not be decoding the file properly.

I would like to know why.

1165260 2010-12-28 10:22:00 Then you need to convert the DivX files to a different format which your DVD Player can read properly ... like .iso format.

You need to find out what types of file format your DVD can read ... either read the instruction manual and Google the model specs.

.AVI is a very very old spec, it doesn't even have a field for what aspect ratio the video is.

There's a good chance that it's just being misread or mis-decoded - not all encoders are created equal.

Re-encoding will probably help, but how does converting an Audio-visual file into a CDFS image help? Try MPEG2, or if your player supports it, MP4. Yes, yes, I know that DivX is an MP4 codec, but it's the container file that's screwing up the playback.

1165262 2010-12-28 12:36:00 The Panasonic may need a firmware update? check their website? apsattv (7406)
1165263 2010-12-28 21:12:00 Hi Jeff

I have the same model Panasonic DMR-BW850... Some DivX wont play at all, some play full screen. I feel it is in the way they are created as I have had similar problems as you have had.

I have a Samsung TV and what won't play on Panny, play OK on Sammy through the USB port, but needs to be expanded with the TV aspect controls. Then it is perfect.

The only thing I can think of is to check in Others/Setup/Connections for the aspect settings. mine is on 16:9 on the top setting (TV), and then 4:3 on the next one (4:3 playback?).

Have you tried BD writing yet? I just bought 20 Verbatim 2x BD-R from Amazon for $62. My first lot of 20 I got, SWMBO bought back from Canada for me in July at a cost of $150, so maybe the price is coming down.

What a neat machine the Panny is... No approved Guide - but that is probably a blessing and there are simple workarounds for booking programs. You can edit the HD stuff off freeview and save to HDD and write to Disk if required. I am really chuffed with mine.

1165264 2010-12-29 05:33:00 Kenj,

I haven't tried writing to BD yet. Can't find discs at a reasonable price.
Even from a wholesaler.

The only firmware updates are for the BD player and the Viera Cast so I haven't bothered to install them.

Hopefully there is an update coming that may fix this.

Otherwise I love it.

1165265 2010-12-29 06:32:00 I have an older Panasonic DVR. I can feel your pain. Panasonic support sod-all media formats, and typically only the bog-standard mpeg formats can be relied upon to work.

I have a cheap and nasty Transonic that can handle any sort of file I throw at it, but unfortunately it's internal DVD drive is lousy at reading media.

If they could combine the decent DVD hardware of the Panny with the firmware of the Transonic then I'd be happy!

Suspect it all comes down to royalties, and which hardware manufacturers are prepared to pay them to use the codecs. Dolby's damned AC3 format being another example of pain foisted on the end-users when major companies wont shake hands on a deal.
