| 1165267 | 2010-12-28 08:25:00 | Does anyone here have any experience with the jeep cherokee ? We have been offered a low mileage one, 42,000k, 2003 model, 2.7L Diesel, Automatic, one owner. In NZ$, would be about $20,000. Have had it out for a test drive, first impressions are good. Excellent AirCon, spacious leg room in the back seats, has that step rail along the side, tow bar, etc. Motor has no visible leaks, apart from the usual annoying diesel rattle when it is first started, quickly quietens down and purrs along. Looking for anyone that has practical experience with the jeep cherokee that can comment on the model. |

Other than that - they prove to be quite good freeway fliers and they get excellent fuel mileage. The few I've worked on for repairs were stout, although not as good as a dedicated 4WD off-road vehicle. Most of these Jeeps never get their tires dirty and they spend all their lives on blacktop, concrete or gravel driveways at home. As a yuppie-car, they were somewhat prestigious, but not mechanically robust after mucho miles were clocked on them, and of course the diesel requires maintenance that most American owners don't understand nor adhere to. (I know - a preposition at the end again). If the vehicle has been taken care of with the CORRECT lubricants and scheduling rigorously followed, then it's a fair gamble. ONE CAVEAT THOUGH::: If you are procuring a model with an automatic transmission, (a 904-E hybrid with the tagged-on OD unit) then if it needs repairs - get ready for major expenses! The torque converter is a hybrid Renault/MoPaR unit that used to cost me over $500.. for a rebuilt --- never mind the cost of a new one! I can't even imagine the cost of one - new or rebuilt - in Upsidedown Land! I would prefer that you also inquire if it has Full-Time AWD or is PART-TIME 4WD. The latter is highly preferred as the viscous silicon differential between the front and rear drives is working hard against tire irregularities and road surfaces, turning ratios, etc., and it burns up after not too many miles. As a rule, I don't like MoPaR or Jeep or American Motors - and especially anything from Renault or Fiat and won't knowingly own any of the aforementioned badges. |

| 1165275 | 2010-12-28 19:39:00 | Friend had one (from new). Transmission blew up - it was replaced under warranty, but as soon as it was fixed she flicked it as she couldn't trust it any more. It was serviced regularly. Don't go there. |
