2010-12-27 02:54:00 | I've got a 500gb HDD that is failing, so I'm running chkdsk from the command line on it under Vista. It has been formatted, so is quite empty apart from the usual NTFS overhead. It started sometime on Saturday (yeah, Christmas Day, I know, how sad is that), and as I post this it is at stage 5, checking free space, and says it is at 29% , with 26,619,579 sectors of 122,070,410 processed. I know the maths seems off, but that is what it says. Most of the time it whizzes along, but every so often it slows right down, presumably when it finds dodgy bits. So, when will it end?

2010-12-27 03:29:00 | If the hard drive is failing then dump it. Quote: "This mode scans every sector of the disk and identifies bad sectors. When a bad sector is detected, CHKDSK will automatically mark it as bad and the system will refrain from writing further data into that sector. The bad sectors will then be remapped with working ones on the disk. Due to the intensive nature of the scan, surface scan mode typically takes very long time to perform. Time range can stretch from a few hours to a few days." ...."If you think your disk is failing imminently, , refrain from using CHKDSK."........ www.datarecovery.com.sg

2010-12-27 03:42:00 | Depends on how many sectors are bad I guess... seems kinda like chkdsk roulette... I'll go with tomorrow late evening (11pm, maybe 1am). | ubergeek85 (131) | |

I only did the chkdsk to get an idea of how bad it is. BTW it is now at 30% with 27,435,579 sectors processed. |

2010-12-27 04:12:00 | So - movement of 1% in an hour: 70 hours, give or take a week, to go...1% an hour - at the moment. But it could slow right down again any time when it hits some more bad sectors - or not... | Tony (4941) | |
2010-12-27 04:14:00 | That's why I said: "give or take a week" :D | johcar (6283) | |
