1166236 2011-01-02 18:47:00 Of course, I don't.

Similarly, would you like all the rules we impose here in NZ or any other country in any part of the world or universe?

You seem to have missed my point, point being Singa is even more rule ridden than NZ.

Alcohol will eventually kill you because of the damage to your liver. OK, it might take 90 years if you drink moderately as opposed to alkies who can die of it quite quickly.

Same with cigarettes. There are no teenagers dying of smoking illnesses.
It kills you when you're old.

So does life.

1166238 2011-01-02 19:40:00 If all we do is think how it affects us as individuals then this argument will never be resolved. If we were to make a decision based on the total cost both alcohol and tobacco has on our society (not just $$) then both would have been banned years ago.

I would vote for both to be banned but that wont happen in my lifetime.

Well let's also ban vehicles, fast food, dangerous sports and anything else that might kill you then.

P, Weed and other substances are illegal drugs but that does not stop people using then does it.

1166240 2011-01-02 20:32:00 Dont believe everything you see on the interweb volts. I think Singapore is winning with its prohibition of drugs. The place is so tight your mum and dad would dob you in if you used drugs.

In Singapore I was pulled out of a night club and a hair sample (a good chunk of hair cut off) was taken from me to see if I was a druggy... Do this here and there will be a lot of crap from those civil rights people...
No chance it would work here, there is a wonderful population all over the country who grow their own grass. Find any bloodshot teenages and they'll tell you where half the tinny houses in their area are, they aren't that hard to find, yet nothing is done about them...
Stoners are quite happy to point another to a dealer.

Smoking prohibited in Bhutan not sure how its going though.
The TV was banned till a few years ago too... How about we do the same here?

1166241 2011-01-02 20:44:00 We all die, no question, how we die in some cases is due to the choices we make. What I don't like is the cost to society as a whole. Both alcohol and tobacco make no sense to me. It is an addiction and not one of our primary needs.

Interesting reading here and anywhere else where this argument can be had that committed smokers use deflection to justify their habit, drinkers use comparison.

Not at all its a Nazi country but prohibition of drugs works.

Everyone knows tobacco is bad for you; the reason it's legal is because it provides money for the government.

Gambling is bad too, in every casino around the country there are hundreds of "regulars", same people day in day out playing the same games and losing money, ruining lives... There are TV ad campaigns for that too, so why not ban gambling too?

If cannabis, P et-al could be taxed efficiently they'd be legal too.

I really doubt that, there is an underground in Singapore. You don't hear about it because the media is controlled by the state.
