1165989 2011-01-03 19:39:00 Dunno if NZ's internet can support this could thing.

Sure most of us here will have a decent connection, or know about the restrains of their one, but the rest of the population will be screwed.

I know many people who live on 500mb connection (mostly over 60) who would get destroyed because windows wants to use 1.5gb every month to play with kernels.

NZ will have to adjust its broadband pricing (finally :D) and make the blasted thing more affordable. Right now its probably cheaper to buy some hexabyte HDD's and download the internet onto that from the secret "internet tap" in the Bermuda triangle

1165990 2011-01-03 20:41:00 The thing I'm curious about is the comment made by Steve Ballmer when he says says "Windows 8 is a big risk for Microsoft"

That could mean anything - there could be huge changes, or functions that have never been tried before on a mass scale. Or it could also mean something simple like putting out another OS only after a couple of years from W7, but expect the use of cloud computing more and more.

One thing I highly suspect, it will involve a lot more internet usage.

1165991 2011-01-03 21:14:00 These luddites that still harp on about XP really need to wake up.

Windows 7 is so much better especially in the area of file managment, which is what I use a lot.

I was annoyed that all the Control Panel options had been moved. But as many of you are saying its just a question of using the search box.

I am still not using the search box as much as I should but it really is great.

1165992 2011-01-03 21:18:00 I suppose what Steve Ballmer is worried about is weather people will upgrade to Windows 8 so soon after 7.

I would still like to know if the corporate world is moving over to 7.

We all know they did not move to Vista.

Someone must know the answer to this.

And Wainuitech, some of those new features you have mentioned are really game changers.

I'd love to be able to tell my pc what to do. I hate typing.

And if it could answer me back in an Anabelle Langein voice or an Alsion Mau voice, that would be even better. Forget Hal.

Luddite? Vista and Windows 7 are designed FOR luddites. That is the whole point I am trying to make.

I know what I want to do with my PC and I know how I want to do it. What I don't want is an Operating System which assumes I am an idiot and hides things from me.

What is so great about Windows 7's file management?

Crappy virtual 'Libraries' for your files which hide the real location of your data so you have no idea what is actually going on? Great! I've always wanted to know LESS about my files.

As for the new C:\Users\ instead of C:\Documents and Settings\ ... WHY? It just adds to the confusion and brings no more sensibility than the previous naming scheme.

1165996 2011-01-03 22:27:00 Luddite? Vista and Windows 7 are designed FOR luddites . That is the whole point I am trying to make .

errrrrrrrrr care to explain:

luddite:

1 . One who fears technology (or new technology, as they seem pleased with how things currently are . . . why can't everything just be the same?)

2 . A group led by Mr . Luddite durring the industrial revolution who beleived machines would cause workers wages to be decreased and ended up burning a number of factories in protest
A luddite generally claims things were "just fine" back in the day, and refuses to replace/update failing equipment/software/computers on the basis that they were just fine 10 years ago . So you want things to stay the same as XP ?

As mentioned before --- when the Beta comes out - write to MS and tell them what you want ---- maybe they'll listen to you -(great Tui's ad) ;) complain to them .

If you dont like the New OS's, then either make your own, or go back to one you do like .

errrrrrrrrr care to explain:

luddite:

1 . One who fears technology

They don't know what the Pagefile is, they don't know what a DLL is . They have no idea what GDI stands for . They encode WAV to MP3 by changing the file extension .

And they don't want to know either

They want their computers to magically work without the need for anything to be configured . They want to treat the computer like they probably treat their cars, drive it, never change the oil, never clean the sparkplugs, etc . . .

As long as it goes, and does what they want, they don't care and don't want to know .

They most certainly don't want to be able to easily find confusing settings that talk about things they don't understand .

They want their computer to be as Un-computerish as possible, and more like their TV . They don't want to think .

Microsoft is trying to make Windows like this, for these people, and in turn makes it infuriating for someone like me who actually DOES want to know things, wants to change settings and wants to do so with EASE, rather than running around trying to find where they hid whatever setting I'm trying to find .

If you dont like the New OS's, go back to one you do like .

I do, I still use XP :D
