1200348 2011-05-08 10:20:00 Okay, I'm trying Gparted now... Let you all know how it goes. sahilcc7 (15483)
1200349 2011-05-08 10:25:00 It's because doing it under Windows means you are using the partition that the partition manager is trying to work on so there is a greater chance of a stuff up.

But, as always, you would create an image of the whole physical drive before you repartition anyway would you not?

Well you are asking for it if you don't IMHO.

If you boot off a CD/DVD and start the moving etc of partitions and there is a power cut you should, at least, have a way of getting back to where you were before.

Not everyone has the means to do an image and it just makes far more sense to do it from a bootable CD so that you can be sure nothing is going to interfere with the disk operations.

So you are saying that a power cut will not interfere with disk operations then if you boot off a CD?

Stop being a pratt unless you have an UPS of course it will. Why have you got such a thing about the sensible advise of using a bootable CD.

My advice is to use what gets the job done easily and safely. Some partitioning software that is on bootable CDs is not that easy to use. I've seen people who don't know what they are doing try that sort of operation and finish up installing some version of Linux on their PC and I then have to try and get them back to square one with their images or backups if they made any in the first place.

Calling a person a pratt does not actually help the OP BTW.

A ups would help but I would not trust one to last long enough to finish the whole operation.

I generally use Murphy's law in these situations. If it can happen then eventually it will and if you can't image or backup then you probably should not be trying to re-partition.

Most repartitioning tools actually advise making a backup do they not?

Please tell me precisely how many people you know have done this and I would also be interested to know if anyone else has ever struck this, as all the bootable partitioning CD's I have come across would need an expert to install Linux from them.

1200355 2011-05-08 11:56:00 Two so far. Both laptops with hidden restore partitions as it happened.

And you failed to answer the question about making backups BEFORE you try to repartition.

Do I take it you don't bother doing that and just rely on nothing going wrong?

Why do you try to create arguments out of nothing. You all of a sudden try to make a stupid argument out of backups. Does it make you feel all knowledgeable and superior or are you just pedantic.

Just perhaps it may be that I value other peoples data more than you do and once again you fail to answer the question I put to you.
