1166269 2011-01-01 11:02:00 (tl;dr at bottom)

So my samsung tv died today and I need a new one until it's repaired. I'm looking at getting either a sony, LG or panasonic, or a transonic.

The idea is, mum wants a big tv or monitor in the sleepout as she exercises out there. (19" too small)

So I was thinking either get a new tv for the lounge and chuck the samsung in the sleepout, then replace it later on with a monitor or cheapie tv and chuck the samsung in my room,

or just buy a transonic tv to go in the lounge till the samsung's repaired, then biff that in the sleepout, then get a tv for my room later.

In any case, the sleepout TV's image quality doesn't need to be spetacular. Just needs to be big and watchable.

Kinda confused as to what I want to do, what do you guys think? if you care to answer? otherwise:

TL DR:
which is better, sony LG or panasonic, (for $800 32" tv's) and is a transonic tv likely to blow up in less than $400 of use?

1166270 2011-01-01 18:16:00 this gets deeper, LCD plasma?

What are other main uses? TV viewing? gaming? DVD? BluRay?

what is your price range?

1166271 2011-01-01 19:49:00 I bought a 42in LG LCD a month ago and it is super - cannot fault it. Connects to the internet and has 100 Hz motion flow.

Cheap tv's such as Transonic and Konka are a gamble - they could last for years but also could have problems just out of the 1 year warranty. As far as 'viewing' they look OK. The other brands you mentioned are probably equal as far as quality although Sony usually is more expensive and has a higher 'market rating'.

Plasma's give a better 'bang for you buck', especially with 50 inch or larger. LCD or Plasma is a personal choice. For me, I do not like the reflection of a plasma screen, and LCD's appear more vivid, but others here on PF1 will prefer a plasma.

1166273 2011-01-01 19:58:00 Go with Sony or Panasonic. Both have good reputations.. paulw (1826)
1166274 2011-01-01 20:01:00 Your interpretation of Transonic seems correct, based on my experience with a DVD player they made... cheap but dubious reliability. Paul.Cov (425)
1166275 2011-01-01 21:54:00 Was in the wuddy fuddy the other day and they had a transonic next to a Sanyo both playing Alice in Wonderland the colours on the Sanyo were so much more vivid and bright. I would think the choice now would be LCD or LED-LCD gary67 (56)

And why is that.

I am going to say Panasonic is always the way to go.

1166277 2011-01-01 22:36:00 I have two LG televisions, The 50" plasma is stunning and I had no issue considering an LG for the second purchase, Though I was all geared up to buy a Sony LCD when the store set up an LG LCD beside it and the picture quality of the LG was far better then the Sony.

Sure Sony would have had comparable picture quality at a higher price but I always decide on my price bracket before making a purchase and only move it if there is nothing suitable at that price.

If you have money to throw away.

I think the best overall would be Panasonic imo. LG is not bad but quite a bit cheaper. Parents just bought a new LG 42 and there is no way to turn it off standby without flipping the switch at the wall. Picture quality and sound is pretty average compared to my 42 Panasonic. I wouldn't trust transonic.

Post probably sounds really biased towards Panasonic but I'd happily take a Sony if someone paid for it.

And on another note, some of those new LED (i think?) TVs look amazing, the really thin ones. The quality on those is unbelievable.
