| 1461771 | 2019-06-27 06:20:00 | we replaced the bathroom light/heat/fan unit yesterday and today. Should have been simple but I noticed: 1)There were 2 cables, 1 had an earth wire, cut, not attached to anything 2)The phase in light and also neutral, there were 2 wires in the plastic connecty thing, I forget what you call those. Why? ANyway, I had a hell of a job getting both into the new one. Eventually managed, sort of, then my brother said oh fluorescent over sink not going. Aha....that's why there was 2. So today re-did it, got rid of the other light, and rewired things, much, much easier now not trying to jam 2 wires in. I asked my brother, some electrician put that up ages ago. 1)He should have wired it to a separate switch 2)That was the earth that was cut and not connected to anything. Really? Shocking. Potentially literally. |

A lot of times a cable with the earth wire was used just because it was at hand and there was nothing to connect the earth to anyway. But if the fitting had the connection then yeah, should have been connected. Might pay to check the other end is connected to something if you reused it. |

He wired the thing into the other connector, phase, neutral, so why not earth as well? If he did it that way and not to another switch... Anyway, we have removed that other light altogether now. And earthed the fan/light unit. Of course. I know the rules, once, depending where it was a light could have just the 2, but bathroom?? |
