1459780 2019-04-06 03:31:00 Hi
I have a 34MB jpg scan of a long family tree. And I want to make some simple changes (using free software). Unfortunately it is too large for good old MS Paint or Paint-3D to open. I tried; they complained!

WHAT I TRIED:
Open 34MB file in irfanView. Resize to 75%. Save. The file is now 23MB and that opens in MS Paint. No sweat!
Works like a charm EXCEPT the small text is now slightly blurry when it is printed.

THOUGHT:
I could cut the original file into two parts with IrfanView. Edit each half separately in MS Paint.
Then join the two halves somehow...but how??? I can't join in irfanView (or MS Paint obviously).

Thanks in advance.

1459781 2019-04-06 08:03:00 After splitting into 2 files, you could open one in Paint, expand the
picture area , then Paste the second file alongside it. You may find
Resizing is not needed so the text blurring will not happen.

1459783 2019-04-06 08:23:00 If your files are too large to manage with Paint, you could try
a free jpg to pdf converter which would split your original into
pages. Have not tried this but here is where to download one:-

ALMOST idiot proof to use - Install, then on Original picture, right click - Resize Pictures, lots of simple to understand options. :)

Example, original Picture 6.5MB Settings shown 491kb, no distortion or noticeable reduction is Quality (including text)

1459785 2019-04-07 01:09:00 Someone talked about "old software/programs" in an earlier post!.

billy I'm a family history buff and many years ago there a wonderful software called "sideways" part of Lotus123.

It printed out on a dot matrix printer.

Boy we miss those days.

1459787 2019-04-08 00:53:00 Have you tried paint.net? I can't find info on the size of file it can handle but I use this program instead of MS paint. user (1404)
1459788 2019-04-08 06:51:00 If you simply want to resize upwards (more than double), which is hugely difficult without losing a lot of resolution, then the program ON1 is the best on the market, as far as I know. They have a one month trial before you buy. Seems a bit late, but if it is simple editing, which seems the case I could probably do for you gratis. However, using the program that I use, one of our international users spent six hours on one old image of Helen Mirren! It depends on what you want to achieve and when. Misty (368)

MSPaint is rubbish for photo editing and will wreck image quality due to its lack of advanced resizing methods, and just general overuse of lossy compression when saving anything.
