1459703 2019-04-02 00:54:00 Hi...…….noit is not :D
I have a Radeon Sapphire RX580 8GD5. I bought it used from TradeMe seller. I commented on this in another Thread I had but it wasn't specifically about the GPU Card.
I connected it about 3 week ago...seems to work ok. Then a week after it started making sounds like that heard from a HDD with heads on platters.... that sound increased until a week later it sounds like a concrete mixer. I never checked to see if the Fans were spinning when I connected it to Computer. Last week it was making a hell of a racket as far as I am concerned. I had searched the computer for the sounds previously but this time I decided its the GPU. Finger touch the case, its hot, touch the two pipes at the top, hot..... 8 and 6 pin cables connected and good as tried spares that came with the PSU I bought and still same. No fans spinning. Simple question: Are Fans on GPU meant to spin continuously or start-stop as and when cooling is required/sensed? O have never heard or seen the 2 Fans spinning at all.
I removed the GPU and haven't heard a sound from the computer at all since..... The connector from the GPU PCB to I guess the fans controller panel is connected far as I can tell without opening the case of the device.
I have emailed the seller and told home and he states it was tested before he sent it to me thereby dumping the poo on me or the Transit Courier.
Next question I won't ask because your replies will do that.

Thanks

Garry

1459705 2019-04-02 01:19:00 Fans can be loud but shouldn't sound the way you describe, also it's quite normal for them not to spin until the card reaches a certain temperature.
Sounds a bit like the fan bearings are worn out.

Always pays to check the simple stuff too though, are you sure none of the wiring was coming into contact with any of the fans? It's very common for a stray power wire or something to make a horrendous noise when coming into contact with a spinning fan blade.

How new was this card meant to be and was it used for mining?

1459707 2019-04-02 06:40:00 I bought a GPU off trademe a few years back real cheap because it had one crook fan.
Bought a set of two off ebay for about $5 delivered.
It's still going strong in a gaming pc.

hi. yep no wires from PSU to GPU touching anything at all (2400G APU Fan/Case fans are only fans in computer apart from the two on the GPU) I know the sound of something spinning clipping a plastic coated wire such like. I don't know how the GPU Fans can be making a noise because the Fan blades don't spin, but could be the bearings are shot as you said and they not making the fans spin. As for the age of the card I do not know how long the Seller had it for but yes it was used for mining as I found out After I bought it from him. He hadn't replied to my question if it had been used for Mining when I asked it about 4 days before I bought it in the last hour as the price was still $280.00. He told me by email about a week later when I got the GPU. Said it had been used for mining "on low temps and undervolted which makes strain even less".... yeah, yeah yeah. He sent a pic of his mining rig: 12 of these Sapphires all linked together...………… I will open the GPU case and see what's in there...silly question...does the GPU Card have to be on the PCIe3 slot for it to run (with the 8 & 6 pic cables from PSU connected of course) or can I get the fans to run by using just the 8 & 6 pin cables??

pic of his Mining rig attached. There is only 8 Sapphires showing but he said in an email he had 12 and was stripping it down a bit.

Cheers

Cheers, I will have a looksee inside the GPU...…… I won't mention the emails content that have gone between the Seller and myself. Profane they are now.

1459710 2019-04-02 07:07:00 :D hahahahahahahha :D not a laughing matter really :D

another thing I forgot to mention because its working perfectly and doesn't make any noises...the Corsair HX750 Watt PSU I bought for the new rig I built,,, its fan doesn't spin either :D :D :D ……. ummm…. maybe the current draw on the PSU is so small nothing is getting hot inside the case( ?) The Fan on the CoolerMaster 550W I had before would spin up at computer power up and run continuously.
That is off topic...just thought I would throw it in here because when I was looking for the source of the original faintish bubbling/scraping sounds I looked at all the Fans in the New Rig.

Asus Prime B450M-A... AMD Ryzen 5 2400G APU... G Skill FlareX 16GB DDR4 2933MHz (running at 2400MHz) … Corsair HX 750 ..… Corsair MP300 SSD ….. Samsung 860 EVO SSD....W10x64 Pro v1809

Intelligent Fan Control III
Zero dB Cooling

Enjoy complete silence under light workloads with entirely passive cooling. No spinning fans means no distractions while you work or chill.
PRECISE FAN CONTROL

Traditional fan may have up to 10% difference on fan RPM from fan to fan at the same fan duty cycle. Now with the new fan controller on the SAPPHIRE NITRO+, this tolerance is reduced to 3.2%. This improvement on the accuracy ensures the cooling and noise performance of every card is up to the standard.

1459712 2019-04-02 16:54:00 I would open up gpuZ and check if the bios has been tampered with as is often the case with ex mining cards. It may have been replaced with a video bios that undervolts the gpu and alters fan speed curve. apsattv (7406)
