1459667 2019-03-31 20:18:00 I know to you experts this will be simple but to a really old sod it’s not!
A simple home network with 2 PCs.
An older W7 used to run a weather station.
From the W10 one have a desk icon to go into the W7 files.
Now for some damn reason can’t access the W7 one from the W10 one.
Have changed NOTHING!
Thanks

1459668 2019-03-31 22:01:00 We need a bit more information. How is your network set up, is it hard wired or wireless. Is there anything else connected to it apart from the 2 PCs and weather station and if so is the rest of your gear all working as it should? CliveM (6007)

Sorry should have said - hard wired and internet all working fine as is a completely separate NVR.
Thanks

1459670 2019-04-01 00:06:00 Ok restart both PCs and try again.
Can the Win 10 see the W7 machine at all?

Thanks tried that plus rebooting the router but no joy!
And no - the W10 in Network does not now show the W7.

1459672 2019-04-02 00:17:00 I am just another old sod "stuffed" so hopefully someone else will pick up on this and give you some better advice.
In the meantime see if you can ping the W10 from the W7 and visa versa.
You said earlier that the internet is working ok, is that from both machines or just the W10 one?
From what you have said it appears that the W7 is no-longer playing on the same network for some reason.
"Network Inspector" is a free tool in the W10 Store which you may find useful to help find out what is gong on.

1459673 2019-04-02 00:51:00 Yes the internet is working fine on both PCs.
I now see that the PCs are on different Networks.
How the hell did that happen?!
But how can I change say the W7 one?
Many thanks

1459674 2019-04-02 01:06:00 Have a look at this on the W7 machine

To change Network Profile on Windows 7. On Windows 7 search for Control Panel in the Start menu and open it. Now, scroll down and click on the link “Network and Sharing Center.”
I think you will be able to fix it there but it is a while since I had any W7 gear.

1459675 2019-04-02 03:36:00 Those network numbers dont really mean anything, all they actually are is indicators as to different connections previously. I'll explain -- When you first plug in a computer, you'll get the network connection to the router, this will be Network 1. Lets say some time later you change routers, the next connection will be network 2 and so on, all those mean is at some point the W7 has had 5 different routers/ IP ranges and W10 has only had 3.

One of my laptops has a LOT of different connections. If you want to make them the same ( really wont matter) 1st unplug the cable from the PC. Open regedit -

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles There you will see all the previous connections, if you click on any in the left window /list on the right window will tell you where it was. Delete them all then plug the Ethernet back in, it both will then be on "Network", also make sure you allow sharing /visible.

More on that in a sec>

Here's my laptop, each entry -- its the list of different routers its been connected to and that's a short list compared to one of the others :D

What you want to do is open a CMD on both Computers, type in ipconfig <Press enter> look for the default gateway, they should be the same on both computers.
Next on the W7 look at the ip address it will be the same as the gateway except the last set of numbers will be different. Note down the address, now go to the W10, in the CMD type Ping insert the W7 address

Example: ping 192.168.1.100 <press enter> if they are talking you'll get a reply like this below, if not / times out there is something stopping it.

The ping to one of my servers which has a IP of 100:
9517

Assuming they are talking, you can try opening from command as well, either in the address bar of any open window type in the W7 Address it should open.

OR Windows key + R type in the address
Example again to one server: IMPORTANT make sure you put in \\ before the ip address
9518

If they open then check some settings,
1. Make sure network Discovery is ON
2.W7 make sure you are NOT using homegroup - W10 wont work with Homegroup.
3. Make sure you are on the same Workgroup.
4. In W10, turn off password protected sharing if its on --- this has been covered many times or google it.

That will do for the meantime, anything more can come later.
OH BTW-- some internet security programs will play hell with networking, you'd be surprised how many customers computers are fixed by simply removing the crap programs like Avast or mcAfee:yuck:
