1462860	2019-08-05 02:45:00	For goodness sake, you clearly have total ignorance about what goes on in a disaster scenario. The "Canterbury" phone calls were for a huge variety of reasons, both outgoing and incoming. Some were for emergency services like fire and ambulance. Others were for family reasons, such as trying to find out whether elderly relatives were OK or needed assistance. Some were to find children, or coordinate parents to pick up children from different schools or day care. Some were for reassurance. To typify these calls as panic calls shows abysmal ignorance or thoughtlessness at best.	John H (8)

Old school phone lines to be disconnected . Dodgy ISP's are tricking some home users into upgrading to Fibre , by saying phone lines are soon to be cut off when they wernt .	1101 (13337)
1462862	2019-08-05 09:59:00	Piroska, in a disaster you need to contact people to find out if they are ok, ie at the time my mother, at her home and friends who might have needed my assistance, they did, bookcases had fallen down and blocked the passage way plus the fireplace had caved in right across the lounge floor. I had to fight my way out of my flat, couldn't open doors as they were jammed by books and debris which had fallen on the floor, a concrete table had moved about four feet across the room. 26" tv smashed over onto its face, lots and lots of broken crockery and glassware, it was a big disaster. Had to fix holes in Mum's roof where the rafters and supports had punched through and where the brick chimney had fallen over and rolled down the roof, breaking about 30 Atlas roof tiles. All the VDSL providers are only offering the phone as VOIP so I don't want that.	zqwerty (97)
1462863	2019-08-05 10:11:00	After phoning around today I have decided that we are being seriously ripped off by the monopoly providers who are all in cahoots, there is no meaningful competition at all, as far as pricing goes privatization has been a failure. Chorus does all the hardware and the superstructure ISP's are just shuffling a couple of dollars in silly options. "Chorus is a provider of telecommunications infrastructure throughout New Zealand. It is listed on the NZX stock exchange and is in the NZX 50 Index. It is the owner of the majority of telephone lines and exchange equipment in New Zealand." 1101 thanks for the link, already looked at that, the options are a joke.	zqwerty (97)

1462868	2019-08-18 04:44:00	There are alarm systems and medical alert systems that use a copper landline, time newer solutions were found perhaps but for some they are essential for now. Also you may not need your landline in a power outage, but it might be nice to have the option. And that's coming from someone who doesn't even have a land line :) Personally I've been meaning to get another UPS just for the ONT & router so my internet keeps going in an outage, don't need it but I want it. When the Kaikoura earthquake happened it took out my power and shook my house all the way up here in Hamilton. I used a temporary jackup to power up my internet and find out what happened. Yeah I used the phone first, but it's not the best device to read a news article on.	dugimodo (138)
