1459833 2019-04-09 03:52:00 Most of my games have been point and click but some newer ones use WASD or arrow keys and I'm thinking of buying a gamepad. I have no idea what I need to know before purchasing one but am wondering about the suitability weight wise for a female and if being left handed is relevant in choice. Would something like the Logitech F310 gamepad be ok. They seem to cost around $35-$45. I have a desktop PC, Win10, Nvidia GTX750Ti. Thanks for any help bellbird (6169)

1459835 2019-04-09 04:53:00 For maximum game compatibility the PC version of an Xbox controller is the safest option if a little pricey. I have a logitech controller that looks like PS3 controller and it's a very nice controller to use but I find quite a few games just don't work with it. Blame MS but many games have built in default support for just the Xbox family of controllers.

My Xbox PC controller is an older Xbox 360 model but it works with everything.

No Idea about left handedness though :)

One bit of PC gamer snobbery, if you are thinking of playing FPS games with a controller please don't. Keyboard and mouse control is far superior :)
That said in a lot of games like the latest far cry I keep the controller handy for driving and flying but use the mouse and keyboard for any actual fighting. Luckily a lot of games let you switch back and forth seamlessly.

As I said.

However for the don't care - just wait for Stadia.

1459837 2019-04-10 03:14:00 Guess I'm not a real gamer piroska ;) Thanks dugimodo. I might see if I can borrow a gamepad and see how I go. I don't play FPS games. I find that using the shift>arrow (or W) or space bar>arrow ( or W) for running, jumping etc means I have to keep stopping to use the mouse for changes of direction. About your keeping the 'controller handy', does that mean you can just pick it up and use immediately as needed and then go back to keyboard. That seems like a good solution for me. bellbird (6169)
1459838 2019-04-10 04:08:00 Yes I have the controller attached and sitting on the desk and pick it up and use it as required then go back to keyboard and mouse. Not all games allow this but a surprising number do.

As to stopping to turn.... just takes practice not to need to do that.

Left hand - three fingers sit on W A D, middle finger shifts to S as required, pinky finger does shift or ctrl, thumb does space, right hand stays on the mouse.
With practice it becomes very natural. That said some games just don't suit that style of controls very well and it's mainly for FPS and similar style games.

1459839 2019-04-10 04:37:00 "With practice it becomes very natural". Not for a lefty dugimodo. I will try to use mouse right handed for games and use keys as suggested. Thanks for your help bellbird (6169)
