1166682 2011-01-03 07:19:00 Stepson (no name) - he's a deputy sheriff - got into a scuffle trying to assist his partner when the perp pulled a knife and stabbed the partner .

My stepson shot the perp dead .

The partner had a vest on and just got a small cut - but the knife was recovered and -------------------------- heck fire!

Just 4-years into police work and this happens . Some cops go their whole lives and never pull a weapon at all .

I know when you kill someone, you change . I hope he can handle this OK . I've seen it do bad things to some guys .

Just venting a little . But this sux . I only heard about this a few hours ago . He's afraid to talk to his mom - my wife .

1166683 2011-01-03 07:25:00 Wow, I am glad to here he is OK.

Here in NZ all we read about in the papers lately is about cops running away from criminals if they have a knife or a machete.

Its not a good look.

1166686 2011-01-03 08:36:00 Without that vest, this perp would probably have become a cop killer. Hope your stepson understands that he has just made the world a slightly better place to live in. qazwsxokmijn (102)

1166688 2011-01-03 18:09:00 Would he be interested in becoming Chief of Police in NZ?

We could do with someone with balls.

About the only thing they point at anyone over here is a Speed Camera, in fact they are known here as “The Uniformed Branch of the Inland Revenue Department”.

And this is what happens in America .

Or should the unarmed NZ cops stand there, outnumbered and be sliced up like the first cop?

For some people its hard thing to come to terms with. others hide it and carry on.

Hope he pulls through ok

1166691 2011-01-03 19:45:00 So far he hasn't called here to talk to his mom .

I always tease him and ask if he's shot anyone yet . Now I won't ask that dumb question .

Before you get worried about the crassness of such a question - I come from a family with lots of cops, law enforcement and others whilst my wife's first husband was a cop and a shift commander for his station .

Her youngest son has taken a job in security with an eye for parlaying that experience into police work after some college classes on Law and Police Sciences .

It's unfortunate that cops die all the time defending others and sometimes themselves - but the job does not come without some risks . Fortunately this will have a happy ending in that he got to go home to his wife and two daughters .
