1166713 2011-01-04 10:42:00 There is absolutely NO JUSTIFICATION for deliberately killing anyone. As I said before - disable him. Shoot him in the legs or something but you cannot excuse anyone for what amounts to, at least, manslaughter.

If he was not a cop, then he would be charged with manslaughter at least. Because he is a member of the police he can get away with murder. That cannot be right! That means you have one law for the police and another law for everyone else.

Does that mean that American police can shoot anyone with any provocation? Sounds as though they can. That does not happen in New Zealand, thank goodness.

I would have thought there is no justification for carrying and drawing and using a knife on another human being (unless you're in a hospital and you're a surgeon - but they're called scalpels, not knives. And they are intended to save lives, not take them).

As others have mentioned, knives are lethal in close quarter fights, stab-proof vest or not.

Pull a weapon on a cop - reap the whirlwind.

If you're dumb enough to pull a knife on a cop armed with a gun, then perhaps you are not well-enough equipped to continue living anyway.

This guy got what he deserved. Darwin's Law in action.

1166718 2011-01-05 05:52:00 <snip> As far as I'm concerned, and for those who think logically and clearly, Joe's stepson has averted the death of his cop colleague and himself, and most likely any future victims that the thug he shot would have made.

That's the biggest thing which is easily overlooked - the toll this scum-bag may have taken on many more members of society over many more years if he had been alive and free.

Question: Should he have been free? No
Question: Should he be entrusted with raising a child? No

Problem solved. He'll not make any more mistakes that hurt others. Society is better and safer thanks to that bullet.

The only thing the Joes stepson needs to perhaps run through his head is... What if I'd missed? Where would the bullet have stopped?
Not that the circumstances would have left much opportunity to assess the background or to consider alternatives.

This might all sound two-faced, since I voiced opposition to our own Police being routinely armed, but my concerns were for the cops if/when they were overpowered by the scumbags.
I have no problem with seroius or violent offenders getting shot by Police! (The more the better).

That's why the police departments are using 9MM or 45Cal. Some require .308s, but not too many require .38Cal any more.

Some still issue .357s though.

What's this all mean?

Those (all but the .38Cal) don't just make a neat hole all the way through and out the other side to possibly hit someone else.

The bigger, slower loads release all their energy inside the object that is hit and there's little chance of it getting back out unless the tissue is thin, peripheral or non-vital.

It's the best thing at this time and a Tazer won't stop a knifing in progress and it's not fully trustworthy in a scuffle either where only one barb may hit the perp and the other dart fly off into space, rendering it totally useless.

Hopefully your cops won't have to ask the perp to wait until they can go to their car and open the trunk and get a gun to shoot them.

It ain't timely. Bad people have gotta be stopped at that moment, not after fumbling for keys or the digital combo to open the trunk, get out the gun and load it first.

That sorta of restriction gets many police killed in the line of duty all over the world.

Hopefully youse guys don't lose any more cops because of anal restricted thinking and wanting to restore a criminal to society after they apologize for killing all those people and a few cops.

Most people with this sort of do-gooder attitude live in secure enclosures, with public servants guarding the front gates so they never see the seamy side of society.

Not unlike: "Let 'em eat cake' - wot?

1166720 2011-01-05 19:42:00 If you attack Police Officers with a knife, you are I suspect quite clearly off your head (most likely on a hallucinogen). Alternatively you may be suicidal, as it is not unknown for people to involve the Police in their own death wish.

Pretty hard to argue with someone in that state and if the danger of a further stabbing exists, the officer is clearly required to do something then and there. Potentially if it were possible you could use a taser or a baton if that could restrain the offender, but more than likely in this scenario you've only got a few seconds to do something.

You now need to use your gun and you would be an idiot to shoot for other than the middle of the chest, anything else may not stop the offender and risk him getting hold of the gun. It's not shoot to kill, but chances are it will cause death or at least serious injury.

Shooting someone is unlikely to be trivial for any officer, usually they'd need counseling to come to terms with it but most likely they'd need some time to get back on duty.

There is justification for killing someone, and this is one of those cases most likely.
