1168016 2011-01-08 01:50:00 For those of you who are thinking of giving up smoking, refer to my signature for the Quitline number. Renmoo (66)

1168018 2011-01-08 02:39:00 Smoking'll just destroy your retina.
Macular degeneration (from smoking) will likely hit you in your mid 60's or older.
.

Oh yes. Smoking causes everything doesn't it. Non-smokers of course remain healthy and fit till they die.

What rubbish, I know loads of people over 60, and over 65 who have great eyesight.

My grandfather on the other hand went blind from this.He had never smoked. Nor did his wife before you start spouting 2nd hand smoke tales.

Want to talk poisons? What do you think alcohol is?
Or how about diesel fume city air?

Rant, nag. As if that ever made anyone quit.
I'm off to smoke the rest of the packet in one go now.

1168019 2011-01-08 06:39:00 Although I've never smoked myself, smokers should be allowed to smoke without this excessive tax to make them try to quit.

Perhaps word hasn't yet reached the Ngauranga Gorge that we all end up paying for smokers' diseases.

I'd be happier if cigarettes, tobacco, and everything else associated with smoking was taxed even heavier and the proceeds allocated to a fund specifically for smoker's ailments. However, that is probably impractical to implement or administer, so taxing them at a level way beyond the limits of the average person's budget is as good a means as any of hammering home their social pariah status.

I'd be happiest if smoking was priced off the face of the earth, or banned completely.

Cheers

Re: pctek's rant, I didn't see that before I posted (started the post hours before I finished it). Usual story though, XYZ smoked all his/her life and died at a ripe old age, while so and so never smoked and died at 50. Ergo smoking is a harmless habit, a civil right, and should be left alone.

And conveniently the cause of death is rarely stated

1168021 2011-01-08 08:00:00 Put the price up to $500 per pack of 20 and see if we can get some compliance from these filthy bastards.
I could put up with smokers if they admitted they were an addicts but you just get the lame excuses:

Granny smoked all her life and died at age 85 bla bla
You cant tell me to stop smoking you being a non smoker dont know whats its like.
You cant tell me to stop you are an ex smoker a hypocrite.
What about carnage caused by alcohol abuse fix that first
What about the diesel fumes in the city fix that before I have to quit
We smokers pay for our healthcare with the tax on smokes (Its a snope)
No one should nag me into quitting smoking it makes me smoke more

1168022 2011-01-08 08:16:00 Adding to what I said above, a family friend died late last year of smoking related cancer, he was just 55. He'd also been incredibly sick for a year or so. pcuser42 (130)

Good thinking, as long as we put up the price of beer to say $550 a bottle, we can keep the drunk ba56tards off the roads that way.

. . . Smoking won't create a need for glasses, it'll just destroy your retina . . . . .
Macular degeneration (from smoking) will likely hit you in your mid 60's or older .
Treatment is quite limited - you'll still be in the poo even with treatment .
Treatment involves an anti-cancer drug being injected directly into the centre of the eye, at a cost of over $1000 per shot, per eye, repeated every one or two months . . . .
As I mentioned in another post recently, my dad smoked himself blind, and became a real sad-sack as a result .

My 89 yer old father-in-law smoked all of his adult life and is now blind due to macular degeneration .
He also has emphysema and lives a miserable life of pain and inactivity .

People should have the right to kill themselves, slowly or otherwise .

:( Oh sure, let them burden our health care system and cause enormous suffering to their families and themselves . :groan:

:waughh: Here we have another deluded addict spouting forth nonsense .

By contrast, prefect's post is spot-on:

1168025 2011-01-08 19:55:00 They pay their way and subside health care for non-smokers by hundreds of millions of dollars, why is it anyone elses business?

The only issue I have is those on the benefit buying cigarettes.
