2011-05-16 09:47:00 | Ok lets take a few steps backwards :nerd: --- In the original post you mentioned you were trying to boot from the CD to do a repair (fair enough). Then in a couple of posts back #4, you mentioned : The problem is that the PC continually reboots. It starts loading windows, but does not get past the first screen (with the blue status bar) before it reboots. The question, if you can answer it -- What were you doing, or what was installing prier to the reboot problem starting ? Were you installing any programs, doing updates, or Upgrades, sudden crash/shutdown, stop some sort of install ? Just trying to figure out what has caused the reboot problem to start with.

2011-05-16 10:02:00 | Thank you for your reply, Wainui. I had been installing two or three programmes before this started and that seemed to progress okay. That was all. No upgrading or anything else. There was no sudden crash but one day I started the PC and it kept rebooting. It does not reboot every time, so occaisionally it partially loads Windows, but does not complete. Then it will reboot again. Frustrating. I thought that by using the XP CD I may be able to repair it and that is where I started having difficulties. At present I have the Setup waiting for my next move, as I said in my last post. What should I press, please?

2011-05-16 10:14:00 | Whats the worry is the piece that says "Setup has already attempted to upgrade the following windows installation." Is the word in bold/underlined exactly what it says ? "To retry ugrading to Windows XP, press ENTER" That usually pops up when there has been a failed repair install and upgrading to a higher version of XP Eg: from XP Home to Pro (and you would know if that was done) OR windows was being upgraded from an earlier version. 98>XP When you have the option to press ENTER -- What happens when Enter is pressed - does it carry on, reboot in an endless loop, or some other error message ? Also, your XP CD - Its is XP Pro and not XP home ?

2011-05-16 10:45:00 | I think that it says, "To retry upgrading to Windows XP, press ENTER" because I have tried unsuccessfully to do a repair. I don't think that I have attempted to reinstall windows. When I press ENTER it displays the licencing aggreement. I pressed F8 to agree and it then says, "If the following Windows XP installation is damaged, Setup can try to repair it. To repair press R. To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing, press ESC." What do you suggest I do?

2011-05-16 11:05:00 | I do not know if it is Home or Pro - it does not say as it is a copy, but when I put it in my laptop CD Rom it says, "Windows XPSp2." | Ulsterman (12815) | |
2011-05-19 03:50:00 | Couple of things about this bug me.... 1) the message appears to be talking about upgrading your windows repair 2)-repair install WILL wipe out all on the administrator documents and if this is your only account on the PC, you will lose everything! 3) i would try a safe boot and try and work out why the PC is looping rather than try 1 way solution of repair! I tried this one. And thank you very much cause it help me a lot in my problem. :D

2011-05-19 04:24:00 | I do not know if it is Home or Pro - it does not say as it is a copy, but when I put it in my laptop CD Rom it says, "Windows XPSp2 . " You have to make sure its the correct CD for your version . Theres no point in trying to do repairs with xp home if its XP Pro, as some parts are different . In fact it may not even install from fresh, as the Product key has to match the version . The fact that its a copy is also a worry - its obviously not a genuine CD esp with the name like that . Where did you get it from- as forum rules do not allow help if the software is pirated .
