1167650 2011-01-06 07:05:00 Just driving back from Paekakariki when I hear a nice rattling. I though the exhaust had come loose and was bumping somthing, after pulling in at the fishermans table it turned out I had a flat tire :annoyed: Pretty surprised as I noticed no difference in handling.

After finding out some tidy female had removed the socket for getting the bolts out I had to send a mate back to the cousins place so they could bring tools to change the ruddy thing.

Got back in one piece though!

1st flat so far. Had better be the last!!!

1167651 2011-01-06 07:06:00 Make sure you have the right tools in the car, I find they come in twos or threes. gcarmich (10068)
1167652 2011-01-06 07:19:00 Luckily I only got about 600m, when I got home I rolled one useless tire in the shed and promptly returned with a better jack and my old toolbox!! Never can be too careful!

I must say, glad I didn't get past the fishermans. I would have been on my rims before long and its not easy to get off the road there because of all the railways equipment

First flat? Ever? Or just in that car. I've had two or three in my time and changed the wheels myself. Had all the right gears and stuff. Does affect the handling, just gotta be aware of the change and the funny bumping sound.

1167654 2011-01-06 08:00:00 First ever and first in the car. for some reason the car didn't seem to be driving any different, I think we went over something on the railway lines and it went down as we drove for the 100m or so when we noticed it. I have been in cars (and aircraft) with tires go. Usually you do feel the change so this was unusual.

I was in a a Tiger moth We came down on a fence post I think (paddock airstrip). Luckily I survived. Too bad I didn't get to finish my landing :(

1167655 2011-01-06 08:07:00 I had my exhaust fall off on the way home from work a few months ago . Tied it up with wire to stop it dragging on the road . It still made the sort of noise a boy racer would have been proud of . Rather than take it home I left it at the local garage . I do have a traffic cop living a few doors away .

The mechanic welded it up the next day fairly cheap .

1167656 2011-01-06 08:32:00 I got a flat in my A30 once, stupid thing was so low I couldn't get the jack under it, so I drove home as is. Trashed the rim.
Never mind, the motor died in it not long after - again as I was on the motorway.

The embarrassment, driving along on the shoulder - flat out at 20mph.

1167657 2011-01-06 10:06:00 as for PCtek, that happened to the old truck going to the farm once (big ole flatbed)

We had been meaning to fix the transmisson/gearbox, it finally gave and we were stuck in 2nd.

Diesel trucks have a low 2nd gear :p so we were roaring along at about 20-30 with no hope of starting should we stop. it was early morning and we were lucky that the only set of lights were small and deserted... and red :o

Fixed the next day. and its still going :D

Was going up the gorge in a newlands bus. stuck in 1st, seems to be a happening thing for me!

1167658 2011-01-06 18:00:00 My own conclusions re flat tyres may be wrong, but when I had retreads I had a lot of flats. Hardly any flats when running on tyres that have been mine since new.

A slowly softening rear tyre can drop the grip on the rear when cornering. If the tail starts to flick out when you turn R, then you may have a soft L rear which is no longer sharing the load.

1167659 2011-01-07 03:44:00 Some people have all the luck - I remember my first "proper" bike my mother had just bought me - I tried it round the block and came back with a puncture!
Since then, in the last 68 years, I have had dozens on bikes motorcycles and cars.
But my best ever was riding a 350cc Norton which suddenly came to a very rapid stop. I thought the gearbox had collapsed as the motor was running - I was in gear - but not moving. Then I looked round and saw that I had snarled a length of curtain rail that had effectively jammed the tyre and stopped it moving - but the wheel was still rotating (tough bikes those Nortons).
The inner tube was in a bit of a mess!
