1168642 2011-01-17 22:45:00 Ever more alarming facts are emerging to show how Brisbane’s floods were made infinitely worse by cockeyed decisions inspired by the obsession of the Australian authorities with global warming. Inevitably, the country’s warmist lobby has been voluble in claiming that such a “freak weather event” (as the BBC called it) is a consequence of man-made climate change. But far from being an unprecedented “freak event”, the latest flood was nearly a foot below the level of one in 1974 and 10 feet below the record set in 1893.

For years, Australia’s warmists have been advising the authorities that the danger posed to the country by global warming is not floods but droughts: not too much rain but too little. One result, in Brisbane, was a relaxation of planning rules, to allow building on areas vulnerable to flooding in the past. As long ago as 1999, this was seen as potentially disastrous by an expert Brisbane River Flood Study (which was ignored and for years kept secret). Instead of investing in its flood defences, Australia spent $13 billion on desalination plants. (Queensland’s was recently mothballed because of the excess of rain.)

Last week’s most disturbing revelation, however, was the contribution to Brisbane’s flooding by the South East Queensland Water company’s massive release of water from its Wivenhoe dam upstream from the city (for details see “Brisbane’s Man-Made Flood Peak” on the Regionalstates blog). Instead of controlled releases through the previous week, the company allowed the level to rise to within a few inches of the top of the dam before releasing a vast volume of water, with devastating consequences for Brisbane 36 hours later.

Last spring, Queensland’s prime minister, the drought- and warming-obsessed Anna Bligh, ordered the water company not to allow any releases from the dam because water was such a “precious resource” that none must be wasted.

Unsurprisingly, on Friday, the city’s Lord Mayor asked for a full judicial review of what had happened. But it is time our Australian cousins carried out a very much more wide-ranging inquiry into all the other decisions made by their gullible politicians in recent years, under the spell of a pseudo-scientific ideology which now looks utterly discredited.

1168644 2011-01-18 02:28:00 I think anyone who posts verbatim a work by another author and doesn't credit that author should be shot, although the link in your first post did lead to The Telegraph. :devil

Apart from possibly leading us to think that you may be the author of this piece of left wing bunkum, it also serves to disguise the true identity of the author - Christopher Booker.

For those not in the know, Mr Booker is a widely ridiculed perpetrator of such nonsense. Co-incidentally Mr Booker is also one of the original founders of Private Eye ...

Now, view the article in this new context.

1168645 2011-01-18 02:44:00 I do have to wonder about all the Kiwis that have moved to Australia and take advantage of the so called better wages etc. It would appear that not all are eligible for Aussie Govt help and Phil Goff says the Aussie Govt should come to the party and cough up.

There are approx 500,000 kiwis there and I for one suggest they all come back bringing their expertise with them.

Yes they should all come back.
NZ would really take off if they did (but as Cicero says - fat chance)

I am surprise that Phil Goff is not suggesting that the NZ govt does not chip in to help them.

Whilst I feel sorry for them, they took off for a "better life" and stopped paying taxes here.

1168646 2011-01-18 02:52:00 Thanks for pointing me to Mr Booker, right up my alley.

He talks of a wind farm in England that costs as much as a nuclear reactor, the reactor would be producing at least 13 times as much electricity.

1168647 2011-01-18 03:16:00 Christopher Booker is the author of:
" The Real Global Warming Disaster: Is The Obsession With `Climate Change` Turning Out To Be The Most Costly Scientific Blunder In History?"

Quite a good read, for those who are capable of keeping an open mind on the subject of "Man made Climate Change".

But can we be sure of the facts, how do we know it is not a ploy to lead us away from the fat cats, who are getting richer at our expense?

The mining people who object to the taxing of our natural wealth.

1168649 2011-01-18 06:21:00 Well, I’m almost over, and fed up to the back teeth with all this Global Warming bull… . .

I forget who said “Fools and Fanatics are always so sure of themselves” .

Anyway, it’s all happened before and it will happen again .

I suspect that most of what pctek posted is close to the mark and if the Aussies find that Anna Bligh or Julia Gillard have somehow overruled the “Engineering Calculations” for the “Flood Mitigation Capabilities” of the Wyvenhoe or Somerset Dams, they, are as the Australians would say, “Dog Tucker” .

But, for those interested in Computer Graphics’ and the like I thought THIS ( . abc . net . au/news/infographics/qld-floods/beforeafter . htm" target="_blank">www . abc . net . au) site was good .

Global warming does not have to be a on/off switch . Few events can be "directly" attributed, so stating global warning caused the Australian floods is stupid esp as its happened before .

Global warming does promise more "frequent" severe weather events that will slowly get worse over the coming decades .

How much man kind is effecting global warming is debatable, but the massive 30,000,000,000 metric tons of CO2 emission and growing man kind is pumping into the atmosphere each year is having some sort of effect, who seriously cant believe that .

Seriously, you don’t expect me to take that for Gospel do you?

Maybe you would be good enough to substantiate such a figure?
