1168633 2011-01-12 18:39:00 Have we ever had such a flood or could we get one here in NZ ?

Any one know if we have ever had such an event here in NZ.
I know we had some major floods in the Manawatu a few years ago and some big ones in Greymouth and Queenstown.

But have we ever had or could we ever have such a flood, where huge areas and whole towns are flooded ?

I mean last year here in Tauranga it rained just about every day during the winter (that's what it seemed like). And that is what has caused the Queensland floods, day after day of rain.

Or are we just too narrow a country for this to happen?

1168634 2011-01-12 19:13:00 I got a message from some friends in Brisbane, It said they were rattled but safe, I told them to harden up. Until water is going flowing around your knees its a non-issue.

That said, It will be interesting to see if the river-walls I helped build along the Brisbane river have been affected, be a shame to see them collapse again.

Plenty of blood, sweat and backache went into building them, of course the rest of the crew being skippy poofs didn't help.

The error seem to be in its lack of height

1168635 2011-01-12 23:07:00 230 people killed in Brazil's floods

44 prison guards killed in Israel forest fire.

These events get hardly any coverage in our news.

Its been bad weather since late November According to this (news.sky.com eature_Teaser_Region_0&lid=ARTICLE_15891088_Australian_Floods%3A_La_Nina_ Wreaks_Havoc_On_Australia_Writes_Sky_News_Weather_ Presenter_Isobel_Lang).

1168639 2011-01-17 02:49:00 SkyNews journos are plonkers (and/or maybe their audience is just damn stupid):

...During La Nina ("the child girl")...

"La nina" is much more accurately translated as "little girl", or just "girl".

It looks like they've just opened up a Spanish dictionary and taken a literal translation of each word in the phrase.

1168640 2011-01-17 08:25:00 I do have to wonder about all the Kiwis that have moved to Australia and take advantage of the so called better wages etc. It would appear that not all are eligible for Aussie Govt help and Phil Goff says the Aussie Govt should come to the party and cough up.

There are approx 500,000 kiwis there and I for one suggest they all come back bringing their expertise with them.

A suggestion that will indubitably will fall on deaf ears.
