1168689 2011-01-11 04:54:00 Just looked up Google. SH1 is 70km and 58mins, and they list Western route as 104km at 1:16min. In practice the Western Road is a better road with far less traffic and if you wanted to you could cruise at 120km. Not that I would of course. SH1 still very windy, most of it in nowhere the same condition, and carries much more traffic. That bears out what I originally said, the Western road is less busy by far, and about the same time. Have fun, just keep Lake Taupo on your right hand side and you can't go wrong.120km tut-tut. I will keep that info' in mind. Thanks. Pato (2463)
1168690 2011-01-11 08:29:00 If you are coming to Taupo from the south, you could take the by-pass and take the Centennial Drive exit which will take you to the round-about at the north end of Taupo Whenu (9358)

1168692 2011-01-11 19:20:00 Taupo business has been crying out for a Bypass for years especially Motels along the lake front due to the constant noise throughout the night

Taupo is like the Queenstown of the North Island and the Bypass will only make more attractive

1168693 2011-01-11 19:36:00 I drove through last week and they would have missed out on fleecing me, so

I don't know why they should dislike the business the traffic brings?

1168694 2011-01-11 20:08:00 They won't miss the heavy trucks thundering though 24/7.

They may have been crying out for a bypass in the past, but I understand now that it's been built, many businesses are complaining to the local council because of a noticeable a drop-off in custom.

I wonder why?

Obviously they haven't heard the adage of eating their cake and having it too....

I will do that and also see what the bypass looks like. Cheers. Pato (2463)

:)

I wonder if it had occurred to them to build slightly off the road side?

1168698 2011-01-12 01:34:00 Very impressed with the way they have built in to it a cycle/walking track alongside. It zigzags, alongside the road, behind the cutting, alongside the road, behind the cutting.

Will have to find the start/finish and walk it.
