1168602 2011-01-10 22:09:00 I note NZ has helpers over there at the moment cleaning up houses. Snorkbox (15764)
1168603 2011-01-10 22:21:00 Today we expect to see flooding of low lying areas of Brisbane around 1440 local time (!740 NZ time) when runoff from the Wivenhoe spillway meets HW Spring Tide

That’s serious because the discharge from the Wivenhoe is usually timed to hit the Brisbane River mouth at low tide. Clearly, there is nothing they can do about it, so having a beer at the Breakfast Creek Pub could be a dampening experience. ;)

I guess the people of Queensland, and especially of Brisbane, should be grateful for Joh Bjelki-Pederson and Russell Hintz ignoring their critics and building the Wyvenhoe and the Bruce Highway, which some claimed were white elephants and a waste of money.

1168604 2011-01-10 22:25:00 There has just been issued a general warning for the Brisbane area, with further heavy torrential rains coming in- the waring is effective immediately from Redcliffe South with expected serious flash flooding expected within the next hour. low lying areas of Brisbane are likely to go under, and this could include parts of the CBD.

The missing in Toowoomba have been counted at 72, not 20 as in this report.

1168605 2011-01-10 22:36:00 Australia has been a very generous nation in coming to the aid of less fortunate countries who have suffered major natural disasters, and I trust that with respect to the problems Australia is now facing there will now be reciprocation.

Australia is a Wealthy developed 1st world nation, its not expected to accept official financial help from other nations, like NZ with the September quake it will likely turn any offers down.

Private citizen donations are always a issue, in Christchurch the Red Cross was advertising for people to apply for aid as many people just don't expect help. I suspect Aussies are the same way, most a little to proud to apply for charity.

1168608 2011-01-10 23:48:00 KenESmith, thanks to your enlightening message I have donated AU $25 to the appeal. It is shocking that the people in these areas are excluded from insurance cover and some have lost everything. This is an aspect that our news doesn't seem to have covered much if at all (I had seen no mention), yet to those concerned it is life-changing.

Anyone else wanting to do the same, the easiest way is here (www.qld.gov.au) - you can just pay by credit card online. Note that the amount you choose to donate is in AUD.

I heard on the mid-day news that the NZ Government have said we will help where we can. Supposedly the paper shufflers both side of the Tasman are now trying to reach agreement as to what is needed and can be provided.

Normally, this would mean that the floods will have receded and Australia is in the middle of a drought, whilst the paper shufflers are still shuffling paper and wringing their hands. :D

Anyway I’m picking “Joe Average Aussie” will have the place tidied up, and normality restored, whilst the bureaucrats ate still contemplating the next move. ;)

Does that mean Hone Key and his cabinet going over with the Maori party to get their feet wet?
