1171067 2011-01-19 21:33:00 Hi all,

I am plannig a bit of a trip around the bottom bits of the USA. I am going to a wedding in LA in October.
I really also want to see New Orleans and possibly New York too. I am thinking of doing a bus tour from LA to New Orleans to really see a lot of the country I haven't seen yet (I was born in the US but have not seen too much of it).

I thought about renting a car and driving, but that means I can't relax and will miss out on some of the views while driving. A bus company lays it all on for you. I'm all for the comfort!!

I have done a bus tour of Euope and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Does anyone have any experience with this over there and maybe some bus companies in the states?
many thanks!

1171068 2011-01-19 21:46:00 My info is probably a bit out of date - I did a trans-America via the Greyhound system (not an organised tour) in the early eighties. Cheap, but average comfort, great way to meet the locals, but the bus stations were all in the seediest parts of town... johcar (6283)
1171069 2011-01-19 22:04:00 Be prepared for hours of boredom . And even more hours . Never traveled in the US by bus, but I have driven between LA and Houston several times . The first time, I didn't consult any maps . All I knew was that Interstate 10 started at Santa Monica, and bisected Houston . So, off I started on I10, without any inkling of how long it was going to take me .

Took 2 days of solid driving for 9 hours a day to reach El Paso, and I thought, great, Houston tomorrow . Wrong, another 9 hours to reach San Antonio, then another 3 hours to reach Houston . All through some of the most unremarkable scenery ever .

Houston to New Orleans about 6 hours, most of that through Louisiana swamp lands, again with dead straight roads punctuated occasionally by massive bridges over some waterway .

If you can, I'd go by air, and just go to the places of interest . New Orleans was one of my favourite cities and I had an apartment on the Rue Royale, one street off Bourbon Street . New Orleans, not to be missed . Bon voyage :D

1171070 2011-01-19 22:15:00 Ten years or so ago we took a three-day luxury bus trip from LA to SF - the stopovers and places of interest were great, the fellow bus passengers' company was good and the driver professional. As for driving yourself, have a look at SurferJoe's recent thread of his trip from home to the post office and earlier similar stuff..... no thanks. Scouse (83)

1171072 2011-01-19 22:50:00 Driving in the US is not too bad.

I drove from Alabama to Houston on I10, which is about 12 hours. It's quite relaxing, you just set the cruise control to whatever you like and sit there. No stops (except fuel and meals), no turns, just straight cruisy road.

A little boring of course, but if you are the type of person that's happy to sit there and listen to music and chat to your passengers (if any) it's fine. Much less stressful than our roads.

I also did a 24 hour drive with a stop in between. Also no worries. I was significantly less tired after that than after driving from Wellington to Auckland here!

By travelling on the roads instead of flying you experience a little bit of the US that you would otherwise miss, as boring and pointless as some would say that is.

1171075 2011-01-20 09:44:00 Why not pay a visit to SJ? It's only about (roughly) 190km from LA to Anza. ubergeek85 (131)
1171076 2011-01-20 20:29:00 Thanks for all the input guys. Appreciate it.
If I end up down that way I will knock on SJ's door...

The good thing is I still have 10 months to organise things.
The bad thing is, I still have 10 months to wait!!
