1170844 2011-01-18 23:07:00 I just had a look at the one Telecom installed a while back and decided to look it up out of interest.

It's a MM-3200B made by Marque Magnetics

According to their website (www.marque-magnetics.com):

Not for broadband use but for situations where monitored security or fimr alarms must report out using the telephone line.

WTF, Telecom? The ADSL works, obviously, but could it be better?

The other thing that doesn't make sense is that it only has two wire pairs - my old filter had 3 connections, Line, Phone and ADSL.

How does it 'Split' when it only has two connections?

Anyone know the full story here?

1170845 2011-01-18 23:23:00 Is it doing its job? If so why bother, if not then obviously look it up gary67 (56)
1170846 2011-01-19 00:11:00 That splitter has probably been superseded by the 3400A for new work but saying "Not for broadband use" is a nonsense. The 3rd connection is just another connection to line. PaulD (232)
1170847 2011-01-19 00:17:00 I thought you always had had to have a 3rd connection, so it worked like this:

-----Line in from road----> Splitter -------> Phone(s)
|
------------> ADSL router

1170848 2011-01-19 01:12:00 the adsl is connected directly to the line and the phone is connected to the output. It is not truly a "splitter" but rather a bandpass filter. It's called a splitter because it effectivley "splits" the phone signal from the broadband one.

ADSL needs no splitter to work, it's mostly to prevent noise on the phone line.

1170849 2011-01-19 02:58:00 There is an interesting discussion over at geekzone regarding the old and new Marque Magnetics splitters/filters.

www.geekzone.co.nz

To be strictly correct Agent_24's diagram should show 2 wires in and two pairs out since these filters have balanced input and phone output.

An ordinary phone filter can be used as a splitter, but its current carrying capacity will be less than the Marque Magnetics. That doesn't matter if there is only one or two phones.
