The only qual I have ever seen requested is Computer Science from University. And that's not a tech/network engineer qual anyway. The CCNP would be more useful although everyone seems to do those now. Get as much experience as you can first, even if you have to do unpaid work at some company. And I'd do that before spending anymore money on courses. Actually according to my tutors 2 years ago there was roughly 215 people qualified for CCNP in New Zealand; These days it's still under 500 by there estimation.... @ Barnabas - with the GST increase I think its gone to 18.5k?!? or maybe it could have been 16.5~17.5k haha Apart from that - I did 2 weeks work experience at a local computer outfit and was just fine. Apart from that I've also run an internet cafe for 9? or 12 months? - So I know most the stuff.. This Diploma is just for the paper behind my name but at the same time I'm still learning lots! - Consensus being paperwork = in the door; Job interview = deal sealer?! |

Get much experience as you can, it is good that you have some experience the more you have the better it gets. In I.T it is all about who you know rather than what you know (sad I know). So if you have connections in the right places who can get you a I.T role, all good. Get that diploma!! education is not worthless, education is good, you need some kind of education to go further in this world, but experience is better!! | forums12345 (15197) | ||
| 1169899 | 2011-01-16 18:24:00 | Your experience is more likely to get you a helpdesk job than Cisco certifications are. From there in the future it might help, if you want to move into an engineering role? I have basic MCP qualifications but I don't even bother mentioning them, or my Level4 certs from Uni, I just mention prior experience. Started on a 3 month contract recently, time finished, they liked me enough to take me on full time and give me a 50% payrise. My boss said to me after a fortnight, and I think he's right : "Qualifications will get you your first IT job, but the ability to learn is what will keep you in it, and help you progress, as the IT world evolves daily!" Get your certs, but its not a magic lamp you rub too get a job. Start at the helpdesk and work your way up :-) :pf1mobmini: |

Another thing is helpdesk is where most people start out but it does not have to be. If you are lucky to get a junior role then all good. |
