1204216 2011-05-21 23:24:00 I'm thinking of getting a netbook as a media centre to play media through a HD plasma tv. Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcome. Krad (7878)
1204217 2011-05-21 23:45:00 Firstly, can the netbook support playing HD content? not just 720p but the full 1080p Does it have HDMI?

How are you doing the sound output? Does the net books Soundcard support surround (if you are using surround)

Disk drive, Most netbooks don't have an internal CD/DVD drive and they most certainly don't have or support bluray. Unless all your films and movies are not on disks then that is a major point.

Will its internal HDD be big enough or will you be buying a new HDD to put in it/external storage. External will probably be a large HDD for performance and price/capacity reasons (not a 2.5" USB powered one) so that means extra space as well as a power supply.

It has been discussed before however I don't think a netbook really has the grunt to properly run an HD media center. They are just not designed to.

Something like this would probably squeeze in with what you want to do, no CD drive though www.trademe.co.nz

Really something like this would be better:www.trademe.co.nz

1204218 2011-05-22 00:09:00 I am running a Netbook as a Jukebox/music player.
Got an 11.6" gateway Netbook off Trademe and have upgraded the following:
2GB RAM module to 4GB
250GB 5400RPM Hard Drive to 750GB 7200RPM Hard Drive
External USB Soundcard (Creative Digital Music Premium)

It doesn't get used to play HD movie content to a large LCD TV and it doesn't have an HDMI input either but works fabulously well for what I want it to do. It was the small footprint in a kitchen or bedroom area that really appealed to me.

It was about 3 months before the AMD Fusion-based Netbooks started appearing on the market and they to me look the business for both what I did and what you're thinking about as well.

HI
Thanks for your advice.
I'll get a suitable netbook for general use and the media centre idea is an extra for showing photos, playing music and the odd video via flash drive or hard drive. If it could cope with HD even better. I am not really after a dedicated media centre as shown on TradeMe. Any further thoughts as to basic spec for the netbook would be welcomed.

1204220 2011-05-22 06:54:00 Has the TV got a USB port? We plug a 500 gig portable drive in that contains all our videos and music and the TV plays them all faultlessly. AVI movies clear and we have no complaints. We also stream to the TV from another PC in the garage (our back up server) via a network cable but for portability the portable drive does well.
