1205297 2011-05-27 22:57:00 just installed the latest version of the pdf viewer.

for anyone who does and want to remove the advertisment page when you start it up(ie not opening a pdf first), go to C:\Program Files\Foxit Software\Foxit Reader, then delete the 'advertisement' folder and the two html links in the 'start' folder and the advertisement page will be gone next time you start the program

1205300 2011-05-28 03:42:00 Is it just me or has Foxit Reader been going down in quality since they tried to bundle the Ask toolbar (since v3 I think)? It used to be such a great product - now, not so much.

I'm going back to Adobe Reader - this is a sad day :(

No it is not just you - Foxit has gone down hill.
But don't go back to  Adobe!

There are other alternatives. I now use Sumatra PDF Viewer (blog.kowalczyk.info) which BTW is open source.

1205303 2011-05-29 00:11:00 You can still use Foxit reader without the Askbar and other crap.

There is a site that one other member here suggested once - cant remember who it was, so cant give credit, but:thanks

Go to Ninite (http://ninite.com/) - you can select as many programs as you want - or just one ( foxit Reader) At the bottom of the page you click get installer, it makes a small exe file you download, then when you double click it, it downloads and installs the program (s) you selected, Heres the GOOD bit-- it Automatically remove s ALL the crap, like askbar, so you end up with just the program you wanted, not half the rubbish they bundle with them

I have just tried Ninite, and it is certainly efficient, but there is a problem with it. Because it is an automatic process, the darned thing doesn't give you an opportunity to state your preferences. The result is that the preferences I usually uncheck on 'manual' installation have all been accepted as 'checked' because that seems to be the default position.

This means that CCleaner (for example) is now set in all context menus, and VLC has taken over as the default application for all audio files, which I don't want. I won't be using Ninite again because of the extra work it causes resetting things the way I want them - particularly the VLC takeover. I prefer FileHippo's Update Checker - it may be a slightly slower process than Ninite, and you have to be alert to customs settings to stop Ask toolbar being installed, but you have more control over preferences.

1205305 2011-05-29 01:55:00 Never had VLC take over ? Then of course it may be the procedure I use to install the programs. That will have an effect on what for example is the default media player.

Where most people come into trouble with Askbar and such, is they use what ever the programs default settings are, instead of installing Via custom or the advanced options, and unticking the items they dont actually want.

This means that CCleaner (for example) is now set in all context menus All Context menus ??? The only Options I can see in Ccleaners context menus is for the recycle bin.

Can you please provide an example as to where else you may be referring to:thanks

1205306 2011-05-29 02:41:00 I just installed this new version on 2 Win XP machines and next day on restart all the desktop icons had reordered themselves on the left. Had to manually put them back where they were. Won't be upgrading anymore PCs.. paulw (1826)
