| 1205098 | 2011-05-27 08:47:00 | My desktop PC has given up working. Was an old P4 machine. I need to build a budget PC so I use the net, do a bit of stuff on the blog I run and store some pics. My budget is $450-$$500 maximum. Any suggestions as to what I can get for that price? |

| 1205099 | 2011-05-27 11:56:00 | go to computerlounge.co.nz and you can use the system builder i think it is called. you can keep your case and psu and just add in motherboard, cpu and some ram and use your old hdd. i think approx off my head $100 motherboard, $200 cpu and $65 ram? free delivery and i think if you get the 3x parts of the combo builder you may get a 10% discount too and maybe further if you pay by direct debit than credit card. |

| 1205100 | 2011-05-27 12:50:00 | Correction that is $99 motherboard, $99 CPU approx and $59 for the RAM. AMD II X2 255 3.1GHZ 2 MB CACHE GIGABYTE MOTHERBOARD WITH DDR3 RAM. SUPPORTS 3GB SATA CONTROLLERS, GIGA ETHERNET, X16 PCI EXPRESS SHOULD YOU WISH TO ADD BUT IT DOES HAVE VGA AND DVI BUILT IN VIDEO. CORSAIR 2GB OF RAM. IF YOU WANNA SPEND MORE ... Intel i5 CPU 3.10 Ghz. $289 Motherboard with the usuals - ASUS. Has builtin video. $199 The same 2GB RAM. $59. If you want a cheaper Intel solution. N/A. As accordingly to Computer Lounge Intel CPUs needs a min of $199 motherboard from them. So even if you went for a i3 CPU that is $189 but the motherboard is still $199. You could go AMD as above or a faster one. AMD PHENOM II X6 1055T 2.8GHZ $99 motherboard. Maybe 4GB RAM instead for $129 ... $509 all up. |

| 1205101 | 2011-05-27 16:29:00 | you can keep your case and psu Not sure I'd trust an unidentified PSU from an 'old P4 machine'.... The last non-working 'old P4 machine' I had my hands on was not working because of the PSU. It was a Hyena 300 watt piece of junk full of leaking capacitors. The voltage regulation was so out of specification the thing was refusing to start. With a good PSU it fired up first time  |

Thats could be Computer Lounge suggestions, you can get cheaper boards that run i3's, I do builds all the time with boards less than they suggest ( Gigabyte or Asus) Its when you start using the H67's or P67 thats when its higher. From ascent - This board (www.ascent.co.nz) around $130 - Gigabyte GA-H61M-D2-B3 Motherboard, Socket 1155 with This CPU (www.ascent.co.nz) $201 - Intel Core i3-2100 3.1 GHz. While not a huge price difference in the CPU, every little bit counts when the budget is low:) Just did a few figures using Ascents site, if your budget was around $600 then that board/CPU could be do-able with a 320GB Drive, DVD Writer, 2GB RAM,enermax PSU, and budget basic case. But of course thats not including an OS, Windows 7 on its own is close to the $200 mark these days, so you would either have to use one you already have, or use something free like Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/). |

| 1205103 | 2011-05-28 01:36:00 | The case is too old to be reused again. System builder on the computer lounge site is not that great to use. They have a prebuilt options instead of nothing and let me select the parts. OS will be Ubuntu. |

| 1205105 | 2011-05-28 04:53:00 | Ascent have a system Builder as well, but you have to create a free account to use it . Other wise simply work through the parts you want one by one and add them up on paper . List of parts you need ( just for referance) Case Power Supply Motherboard CPU ( most come with a fan/heatsink) Hard Drive Optical Drive Memory One thing you do have to watch out for is older model products . For example the Socket 775 motherboards and CPU's while they are cheaper, they are also being phased out quickly, so very shortly there wont be any more available . This can have an effect on a warranty later on, as if suppliers cant get replacement parts in the event of a claim, you may be out of luck . What they tend to do is offer you a cash price back as a refund, which is completely hopeless . Example: I had that a while back - The Socket 775 board I supplied for a customer failed, there was no replacement of the same brand or any other brand that would take his DDR2 Memory, so while the board was replaced with another 775, it took DDR3 memory . At his request we had used his original Memory and CPU , so they were not covered under the warranty . He then had to purchase DDR3 memory . |

Can't they send it back to the manufacturer for repairs\replacement or is that the supplier's job? I remember having to RMA my first 6600GT through SupercheapPC, took about 5 weeks, but maybe that's because it was them, but I got the impression from what they said that they had to send it back to Taiwan or something... |

| 1205107 | 2011-05-28 06:23:00 | Thats what I would have thought as well Agent, The original NZ Supplier had no more spares , so I asked why not send it back to the manufacture, which was over seas.?? It was an Intel Board ( not intel based, but the Intel Brand) Similar to this one (www.intel.com) The ONLY reason I even got that board in the first place was it was the only one available that had DDR2 slots - apparently Intel said no, not interested, just refund the money - Well that was as hopeless as hell, the PC still wouldn't go. So I had to get a gigabyte board, with DDR3 DIMM slots.his CPU and every thing else still fitted, so at least that was something I spose. |
