2011-05-27 04:35:00 | I have a broadband connection with Telstraclear, generally works fine, at roughly the right sort of speed. But occasionally, pages just won't load. Usually if I do a Shift-F5, they load about 30 secs later. I have repeatedly run the test at speedtest.net over the past months. I usually get about 4-5Mbps, which is fine, not great, but fine. But about 2 out of 3 times when I run the test, the green graph at the bottom of the dial just stops at some point during the test. It's like my connection just dies, briefly. If I leave it for a while, it sometimes kicks back in, and sometimes it never does. The graph is also very very up and down. This happens across multiple PCs, so the issue definitely seems to be with the connection, rather than a PC issue. Any thoughts as to what could be doing this to my connection? I'm loathe to call my ISP and report this failure without having some ideas, because I feel like I'm likely to get a massive run-around for an issue that is tricky to replicate.

2011-05-27 04:37:00 | These issues are fun to track down... Do you have a different modem that you could try? Have you double checked everything in the house is filtered correctly? Does TCL let you see a list of your disconnections if you view your usage online? For an example, mine looks like this...

I can see on my modem how long it's been "up" for, and the connection doesn't actually stop when the dataflow stops. It's almost like the ISP just stops sending information briefly. I will check the modem, I'm pretty sure I've got a spare one sitting around somewhere. |

2011-05-27 04:53:00 | OK, if that's the case the first thing I would try is a different modem - use it for a few days and see how it goes. I hope your modem isn't 5 or 6 years old too? :p | wratterus (105) | |
2011-05-27 05:18:00 | Working fine for "X" number of years doesn't mean something can't develop a fault. Also the modem you have might be able to give you stats about disconnections or at least current uptime so you can see if the line is dropping off or not. Does the DSL light ever go off when this happens ? if so it could indicate you are losing sync and points to either a line or modem fault. Do you have Plug in filters? or is there a splitter hardwired to give you a dedicated ADSL jackpoint? plug-in filters are a common cause of DSL faults. The last thing that occurs to me is what has changed recently in the vicinity of your modem? any new sources of interference?, electronic devices?, cordless phones?, someone taken to storing their cellphone on top of the modem ? The hard part is figuring out if it's a fault with your connection (hardware , line etc) or a problem at your ISP.

2011-05-27 06:05:00 | The working for "x" years was more a comment on the fact that filters are in place, and at least up until recently, have been working correctly. IRC disconnects during these drops, which is nice and easy to track. However Instant Messenging services don't seem to drop out - they seem to maintain the connection throughout the drop. I don't use online gaming, so I can't comment on that.
