1204985 2011-05-26 12:09:00 I Have two external HDD's in separate USB enclosures.

I have not used them for awhile, but neither are detected in 'my computer", though both show up in device manager/disk drives.

What might be causing this ?

1204986 2011-05-26 13:06:00 Assuming the hardware is all OK it sounds like there's a problem with the filesystem... are you using an unsupported OS?

eg; trying to use NTFS on Win9x or Ext3 etc on Windows?

What does disk management say?

Sorry, I should have said I am using Vista. I have not heard of disk management. I typed it into Help, but it did not show anything. Where do I find it ?

1204989 2011-05-26 23:06:00 Have they actually got data on them that you know for sure ?

If you format them, any data will be wiped out.

Disk management does not even see them.

Guess they need to be formatted. Thanks

Device manager and then "disk Drives" show nothing at all which relate to the external USB drive.

I am assuming it is not formatted and plan to format it tomorrow. I am expecting it to work OK after the format :-)

1204993 2011-05-27 09:28:00 If they dont appear in device manager, there's no way youre going to format them. If you cant see them. See if Legacy USB is enabled in the BIOS / or see if they appear in the BIOS. if they dont, they wont appear in windows

Or connect them to SATA ports if theyre SATA. See if theyre working at all

1204994 2011-05-27 09:41:00 I have a 2.5" laptop hard drive in a USB enclosure that wont run if connected to a single USB port. I have to use a lead that plugs into two USB ports to get sufficient power to spin the drive up. b.... (7683)
