This looks like best bang for buck at the moment.

1204923 2011-05-26 07:17:00 notebook, gaming, recent games and portable should never be used in the same post imo. Notebooks are just bad news for gaming. icow (15313)

1204925 2011-05-26 23:02:00 any notebook with a decent CPU and expresscard slot can become a gaming machine. You'll need an expresscard to pci-e adaptor and then you can use a desktop graphics card with it.

It won't be as portable as you'll have more to lug around.

IIRC, ExpressCard is PCI-E x1 rather than 16x as on a desktop, which is slower than AGP... What kind of performance could anyone expect from that??

There are plenty of under 2k laptops that have Nvidia 540Ms or AMD 6770s - most games will be more than playable at laptop resolutions...

If you want something better than the 540s or 6770s, it will cost you a pretty penny regardless if you're after a laptop or a desktop.

1204927 2011-05-27 00:09:00 Even with a 1x link, you can expect this kind of performance:
a Dell XPS 15 with a desktop 5870;
3dmark.com

a Sony 13" VPC-Z11 with GTX580:
3dmark.com

Here is a desktop for comparison
www.techpowerup.com

So with a 1x link, its about 70-80% of the full performance.

That's not bad at all!

Any idea on how much the GPU enclosures cost?
I can't seem to find any thing in pricespy...

1204930 2011-05-28 01:50:00 You can get them from here
www.villageinstruments.com

Or you can make your own which is much cheaper, using parts from here:
www.hwtools.net

For comparison, a 5870M gets about 13k 3dmarks
www.kobaltcomputers.co.uk

With a desktop 5870 over the adaptor, it is about 18k, standard 5870 is about 22k.

So it is about 30-40% faster, but I think a notebook with a decent CPU + integrated graphics + desktop radeon will be cheaper than a notebook with a 5870M in it. More speed for less price (at the expense of portability) is always a good thing.
And a notebook with integrated graphics only will likely be more portable than a notebook with a discrete GPU.
