No.

EDIT: There is actually nothing in that article to suggest that the victim was a cyclist. He may have 'fallen' from the overbridge....

EDIT2: If you want another cyclist death story: www.nzherald.co.nz

1172694 2011-01-26 20:43:00 Yes it can be safer for cyclists to ride on the footpath unfortunately footpaths are meant to be a place of safety for predestrians. By allowing cyclists to ride on footpaths you take away that safety from predestrians. Cyclists should stick to the cycle lanes or the roads. If they want to use the footpaths they should walk on them and not ride.

A pet hate of mine is cyclists riding across pedestrian crossings on their bike. This is highly dangerous for themselves and for predestrians.

Bicycles are vehicles and should be used as such.

Screw that.

I use my bike most nights, when doing so I pick the safest possible place for me to be, mainly to take myself out of the traffic flow, and this includes footpaths, walking tracks and pedestrian crossings when required.

My pet hate is Joggers!!! You know - the ones on the road!
Oh look I'm ambling along in my trendy running gear at 3 miles an hour so I can join the cars and trucks and ignore the footpath.

So, so hard not to swerve to their side as I pass them. Hey, Race ya!

1172697 2011-01-26 20:56:00 I thought it was illegal to ride your cycle on the footpath? No idea how it's safer than the road when you have cars backing out of driveways. --Wolf-- (128)

I'm not a cyclist but I can identify with that, and given the option, I'd opt off the roadway, too. Auckland traffic and cyclists don't mix all that well.

Wolf, in parts of Auckland (if not all), it's illegal to back out of a driveway, you have to be able to drive out. Can anyone comment on that, i.e. is it a by-law, and/or confined to designated roads, or what?

Add to cyclists, pedestrians.

I don't cycle anywhere, now I'm thinking I won't drive, either :D
