Title: Still no sign of missing motorist

Police are issuing a photo of a car identical to that driven by an elderly motorist who hasn’t been seen since Thursday.

69-year-old Alex Binns left the Taumarunui area on Thursday morning to drive home to Hastings but never arrived.

Police have since received a report that a man fitting his description was seen in Tokaanu near Turangi around lunchtime. Police believe this probably was Mr Binns as friends have said that Tokaanu was a rest stop Mr Binns used when he made the trip from Taumarunui to Hastings; a trip he made regularly.

Family and friends have driven the route themselves and are trying to organise a second helicopter search but weather is currently preventing a further air search. A helicopter search organised by Police over the weekend revealed nothing.

Police are urging the public to report any sightings of Mr Binns or his vehicle since Thursday. It is a silver Ford Falcon registration XB8100. He would have driven along SH41 to Turangi then SH1 through to Taupo before travelling along SH5; the Taupo to Napier Road. Mr Binns is described as European, with grey hair and a fairly solid build.

Anyone who has seen Alex or has any information on his whereabouts is asked to contact Taumarunui Police on 07 895 8119.

Title: Family appeal for help in finding Alex Binns

The son-in-law of an elderly motorist missing since last Thursday is urging the public to report any sightings or information that might assist Police in locating him.

69-year-old Alex Binns left the Taumarunui area on Thursday morning to drive home to Hastings but never arrived.

Matt Twist said of his father-in-law: “Five minutes from meeting Alex you feel like you have known him for a lifetime. He’s a very happy-go-lucky, smiley man and you definitely know when he’s in the room. He is very caring and loving and would give his shirt off his back for anyone.”

His disappearance is totally out of character with Matt describing him as “an A to B man”. Family are aware he recently suffered a dizzy spell but aside from that seemingly isolated incident, he has no known medical conditions.

Mr Binns is due to turn 70 on Wednesday and had plans for the next two weekends to celebrate with family and friends.

Matt said: “I would ask the public to please report any sightings of Alex since Thursday. He would take stops when driving this route using cafes and public toilets along the way. We just need to know where he is, so if anyone has seen him please contact the Police.”

The family are very upset by the disappearance of Mr Binns and have asked not be approached directly by the media. Police would ask that this request be respected.

Anyone who has seen Alex or has any information on his whereabouts is asked to contact Taumarunui Police on 07 895 8119.

Title: Man's body found in vehicle down steep bank

Around 5pm a helicopter out searching for missing motorist Hastings Alex Binns spotted what appeared to be a car down a bank off SH5 at Te Haroto.

The terrain was too steep and enclosed for the helicopter to get any closer to the vehicle so Police sent a land search and rescue team into the area to check out the sighting. The team located the car which contained the body of a man. It was not possible to airlift the deceased from the area so the rescue team carried him out on foot.

A formal identification is yet to be completed. The family of missing 69-year-old Alex Binns has been informed.

This wasn't the happy outcome we had hoped for, but condolences to the family.
