This is a food court type of place, I came here to eat." You are getting Greenpeace mixed up with Sea Shepherd, they are not related. Greenpeace brings in donations through door-to-door then they use that money to get more people to do door-to-door. Greenpeace operates on a budget of over 100m/yr, SSCS on less than 10m/yr. In any case trawlers have it coming, they scrape the coral right off the sea floor, and expect healthy fish stocks. That is totally barbaric. It's like ploughing an entire forest just so you can catch wild deer, and you just toss all the trees, undergrowth, non-target animal carcasses and expect to come back next week and get the same amount. Its just ridiculous. To take action against trawlers we would need legislation banning the practice. @Jen, I don't think it would be a good idea to close a discussion just because a few people here get their knickers in a twist. However it is your call, if you think this thread is contributing negatively to the off-topic section then close it. |

People who have contributed to this thread about what Sea Shepherd are doing have got to look at the bigger picture, not just at today and tomorrow but in years to come where the sea's and land will be stripped clean of everything. Think outside the square people. Humans are a greedy lot. :) |

| 1172621 | 2011-01-26 23:25:00 | What?? Especially the Japanese as some of you would have us believe? Get real :punk:punk Not especially, but we try to stop these kinds of instances where we can. What the likes of you are suggesting is that we just shut up, sit on our butts and judge condescendingly those who has the will and passion to go out into the elements and do what they know best to stop crimes against nature. Why just focus on one thing, when there are bigger problems (I anticipate this kind of argument)? Well, you have to start somewhere. Not only that, people's skills differ, and it's just so that the Sea Shepherd guys are confrontational (seems like the only way that way that is available and somewhat effective in this case) and persistent. If you were to ask the same question to every nature-protection endeavors then nothing would come to fruition and you will let greedy corporates and businesses bastardise OUR shared resources for THEIR own gains, and when these SHARED resources are depleted or damaged beyond repair, YOU will start suffering as you won't be able afford exorbitantly expensive alternatives while THEY (the profitable corporates bosses etc) enjoy the ability to purchase comfort and security afforded by their greed and your submission. |

| 1172625 | 2011-01-27 02:52:00 | Unfortunately, as any farmer will tell you, you cant keep all the stock born on your property. Should you try you will soon run out of food or loose stock from disease. Let me give you a couple of examples of where humans got it wrong. A number of years ago, MAF I think it was, declared a moratorium on the Oyster harvest in Foveaux Straight. Unfortunately the Oysters became overpopulated and they lost more with disease than they would have through harvesting. The second example was also a number of years ago fishermen I know virtually fished out some reefs with Gill Nets. Gill Netting was a very efficient way of fishing where Trawlers couldnt go. Anyway, fishing these reefs became uneconomical so they moved on. The upshot of all this was that a couple of years later the fished out reefs were fishing better than ever. Why you ask. Well the Gill Netters had taken the pressure off the food chain and just like a farmer changes paddocks with his stock to allow the grass to grow, so the lower end of the fishes food chain was given a chance to recover. Take a look at the world of humans. Do you not see famine, disease and early death going hand in hand with over population? But going back to the Whales, consider the amount of food these greedy sods consume that could be shared amongst a more palatable variety of fish. ;) |
