1204932 2011-05-28 22:09:00 You can get them from here
www.villageinstruments.com

Or you can make your own which is much cheaper, using parts from here:
www.hwtools.net

For comparison, a 5870M gets about 13k 3dmarks
www.kobaltcomputers.co.uk

With a desktop 5870 over the adaptor, it is about 18k, standard 5870 is about 22k.

So it is about 30-40% faster, but I think a notebook with a decent CPU + integrated graphics + desktop radeon will be cheaper than a notebook with a 5870M in it. More speed for less price (at the expense of portability) is always a good thing.
And a notebook with integrated graphics only will likely be more portable than a notebook with a discrete GPU.

what happened to the external GPU dock for laptop made my ASUS? I was seriously considering that when I still had my lappy.....I remember seeing it on ifocus.co.nz a few years back....

I am seriously considering switching from a desktop to a laptop and was looking at Alienware with SLIs...now maybe I can get a cheaper model with a OK GPU then use one of those external graphic card dock again.....maybe...still researching...

1204934 2011-05-29 07:58:00 any notebook with a decent CPU and expresscard slot can become a gaming machine. You'll need an expresscard to pci-e adaptor and then you can use a desktop graphics card with it.

It won't be as portable as you'll have more to lug around.

i dont see that working. How would cards that need external power work. i can imagine this at asus/dell/hp/acer etc HQ: "we should have real batteries, internal 800+W PSU's and extra pci-power cables in our laptops just so people can plug there 580 GTX's in." Because that is so going to happen.

The 3d marks don't convince you that it works?

Dell XPS with GTX 460 running star craft 2 on ultra settings - gets about 40-50 fps.

Yes you do need an external power supply if you make it yourself, the vidock uses external power (obviously) into the box.

I've seen some people make an enclosure out of a shoebox or even sheetmetal, seems to work well enough.

when you have the $$ that is....jst find out that pci express is pretty much obsolete now...talked to a guy from dell support...he said that any new-ish notebook wnt have express card slots on them..being replaced by usb3..which is twice as fast...

there is my cheap alienware + external GPU dream gone....:(

What has replaced PCI-express for graphics cards?

I think the place that sells the express card to pci-e adaptor are working on a thunderbolt version.

i meant pci express card slots on lappies...u dnt c them on recent models anymore...

that guy from dell said that usb3.0 is taking over.....

i wnt mind a thunder bolt port on my next lappy tho.....

I jst don't get it....y don't they just have a (or a pair) of full speed pci-express x16 sockets on a lappy??? im sure they can fit...i mean u have a external GPU station with a full fat desktop gpu, then u plug it in using a ribbon cable or something when u want power, u unplug it when u want mobility.....job done....
