2011-01-26 21:15:00 | Add to cyclists, pedestrians. I don't cycle anywhere, now I'm thinking I won't drive, either :D Pedestrians dont move as fast as cyclists!

2011-01-26 21:32:00 | I disagree about the footpath being safer....some of the worst bits on a ride from the Hutt to Wellington is the "cycle track" at Kaiwharawhara - which is basically the footpath. Cars come and park on the driveways without looking at the "cycle path" | psycik (12851) | |
2011-01-26 21:39:00 | I thought it was illegal to ride your cycle on the footpath? No idea how it's safer than the road when you have cars backing out of driveways. Cars backing out of driveways are doing about 2km/h, where as on the road they can be doing 50 to 70km/h. I'd much rather have to apply my brakes to avoid a reversing car then be shunted up the arse and then run over by a car traveling at speed. That said I stay on the road if its safe to be there, taking to the footpath to avoid intersections, parked cars, skinny lanes, congestion and ********s.

2011-01-26 22:24:00 | I agree with Metla. I'm a recreational cyclist. As for hitting pedestrians on the footpath I think the cyclist would come off worst and as for cyclist being allowed to ride on the footpath check your local council bylaws. :)

2011-01-26 22:32:00 | I personally wouldn't want to be either the cyclist or the pedestrian hit by a cyclist travelling at 30+km/h on a footpath . Both parties would come away with some pretty serious injuries . And as for a "footpath cyclist" vs . "car backing out of driveway" - at the speeds bikes can travel at, a cyclist would be just as seriously injured at that sort of speed as he/she would be if they were on the road . Potentially more manoeuvring room on the road . . . . It's not called a footpath for nothing .

2011-01-26 22:35:00 | I would also opt to cycle on the footpath as well. Most cyclists would or should be considerate of pedestrians. Unfortunately, I've seen some who have absolutely no consideration of anyone else on the path as well. I think they would probably have the same attitude no matter what form of transport they operate. | Marnie (4574) | |
2011-01-26 23:06:00 | Hi BTk re: Why cyclist are not permitted to ride on footpath? Isn't it safer Why? ...... because many of them are simply arrogant sh its who ride on footpaths in the same manner that they ride on roads - as though they own them. I have several experiences of having to step off the footpath to avoid a cyclist careering almost out of control downhill towards me. Even semi-rural and park footpaths are unsafe for pedestrians with some/many cyclists.

2011-01-26 23:17:00 | I am a fan of cyclists using the road in most cases. In Invercargill on most of the main thoroughfares we have narrowed the roads to motorised traffic and put cycle lanes on either side of the road so that cyclists have a safe place to ride without resorting to riding on the footpath. Queens Drive is an exception and common sense has prevailed. The footpaths have been deemed by Council to be a cycle track along part of Queens Drive and it is sign posted as such. It is unsafe for cyclists to ride on the road along this stretch of road as there is no room for them. Cars cannot safely pass them if they are on the road. Riding on footpaths should otherwise be restricted to delivery people (our postie and our paperboy for example).

2011-01-26 23:18:00 | Another cyclist victim (www.nzherald.co.nz). Why cyclist are not permitted to ride on footpath? Isn't it safer? I really think you need to go back and read that link you gave as their is no mention of the person being a cyclist only that they were found on a cycle lane. Probably topped themselves but we won't know until the autopsy is done. The footpath may be safer for the cyclist but not for the pedestrian. If you are a cyclist using the footpath make sure you don't sneak up on pedestrians.
