| 1171664 | 2011-01-22 20:28:00 | We need protesters. People who will stand up and challenge the status quo. People who will question the established order, express novel points of view. Freedoms we take for granted today were only gained in the past by protesters raising issues and gaining popular support. For example, universal suffrage, abolition of slavery, abolition of lawful racism, homosexual law reform, legalisation of prostitution etc +1 (or more) |

| 1171665 | 2011-01-22 20:43:00 | Well said . We should defend the right of people to protest if we want to be a free country, albeit that if they damage a building they should pay for the damage . In this particular case I have no idea what the base is actually used for, but if it is used by the US to collect information on people like terrorists, then I'm absolutely all for it . The rights we have to say what we want were hard fought for, suggesting we lock people up for and toss away the key for expressing their opinion, is what we should be fighting against . Well nutshelled . |

| 1171668 | 2011-01-22 23:07:00 | These anti base protesters are nutcases and should be monitored by the SIS. There is difference in protesting against motorcycle AA levies and these commie protestors. A lot of these nutcase protesters where not born here and for that reason they have no right to protest about anything. If they dont like things here they can go back to their original countries. I just hope the SIS is doing their job and intercepting all their mail and surveilling them |

The rights we have to say what we want were hard fought for, suggesting we lock people up for and toss away the key for expressing their opinion, is what we should be fighting against . Exactly . People need to stand up for what they believe in and we must protect people's right to speak out against governments and organisations . The fact that in New Zealand we can openly criticise the government without fear of being locked up or killed is something we should cherish and defend . However two wrongs don't make a right . That's why I respect people who wish to protest for the protection of whales and other endangered species, but at the same time I don't have any respect whatsoever for Sea Shepherd and their choice to breach maritime laws and endanger the lives of workers to get their point across . |

| 1171671 | 2011-01-23 00:59:00 | I thought protesters were just failing uni students who were bi-curious and smoked too much drugs? If not they must be just tree huggers again. ...and a spy base in NZ? Pfft! Wish they said something interesting like it housed alien bodies etc... |

A decent blow to the head could easily be fatal, especially if someone ends up going overboard. |
