1204782 2011-05-25 03:50:00 I have a couple of Netgear routers setup with a site to site VPN tunnel, bandwidth is limited and I have had a look through the Netgear forums and people seem to be experiencing hard locks with these routers about once per week (has happened to me once so far in the week and a half that I have had them running)

I used to have a couple of Cisco routers set up, but one of them died and they are a PITA to configure so I'm thinking about building a PC based router.

What I'm wondering is if someone can recommend me a decent firewall package that is capable of VPN and bandwidth profiles. I'm looking at pfSense, I have also looked at Smoothwall but it doesn't appear to be free (if you want extra features like VPN), while I don't mind donating, or paying for software, I just want to be sure I am paying for a quality product.

Also, hardware wise, I have a spare bunch of PC parts floating around, such as a P4 (socket 775 dual core) and a Core 2 Duo E6600, I will need to source an extra motherboard, 2 desktop cases a power supply and 4 NICs, is there certain hardware I should look out for or avoid?

TIA

1204783 2011-05-25 03:54:00 Why not look at a couple of Draytek routers?
I've used them for a few clients to replace Cisco units and the VPN connections have been much faster than with the Ciscos.
Also very stable in that I've never had a single complaint about the connection not working.

1204784 2011-05-25 04:18:00 Yeah, how annoying is this, a friend recommended Draytek routers, I bought a couple but they are the real basic models, no VPN, no wireless, in hind sight I wish I had looked in to them a bit more, the reason I got the real basic models is because I had the Cisco routers (which are worth $4k each new)

Is there a model you recommend? do they have built in DSL modems?

A couple of these will do the job:
www.snappernet.co.nz

They have ADSL2+ built in as well.
They also do a wireless model.
