1172398 2011-01-25 05:05:00 All day I have had this old song in my head, and I cannot for the life of me figure out what it is.

This is what I can tell you (not much, but better than nothing) -
it is an old 70's or 80's song, might even be 60's; definitely rock with an old style (similar to that of "Spirit in the Sky" by Doctor & the Medics) guitar sound. Male singer... probably a group
Im sure the lyrics (and I think the first few words of each verse possibly) start with "Baby I (or maybe 'why')" then later on it says something like "what kind(?) of fool am I.... baby baby..."

Addition: also pretty sure it was a hit and fairly popular back in its day..

"What Kind of Fool Am I?" is a popular song written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley and published in 1962. It was introduced by Anthony Newley in the musical Stop The World - I Want To Get Off. It comes at the end of Act Two to close the show.[1][2]

This song was recorded whilst Newley was on the road with this production in the States, after it had flopped in the UK; Newley didn't appear in the UK show. By the time the cast reached New York, Tony Bennett had re-recorded the song; scored a hit, which saved and revived his own flagging career.

The song was a hit for Sammy Davis, Jr. in the year of its publication, peaking at #17 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and at #6 on the Billboard Easy Listening chart.[3] It also won a Grammy Award for Song of the Year. In 1963 Shirley Bassey released this song as a Columbia Record single and her version reached #47 on the UK charts. Lesser chart records included Robert Goulet and the writer, Anthony Newley. James Brown recorded "What Kind of Fool Am I?" for his 1970 album Soul on Top

The song was recorded again in 2002 by Chicago entertainer, Dave Seabaugh on his Dave Seabaugh LIVE album to close his show.

Donald Braswell II recorded this song on his 2007 album New Chapter.

The American rock band Deer Tick recorded a cover of the song on their 2007 album War Elephant.

Clay Aiken recorded the song on his 2010 album Tried and True.

1172403 2011-01-25 06:45:00 What Kind of Fool am I is a sloppy ballad and is nothing like Spirit in the sky.

OP sorry I cant help as there is not much to go on.

BUT I did hear a good story on the radio last year that some US record company was going though their accounts and they found nearly a million dollars in a royalty account for Norm Greenbaum for Spirit In the Sky.

They tracked him down working in some burger bar and he could not believe it.

Don't know if its its true, but that was what the radio guy said.

1172406 2011-01-25 19:20:00 The lyrics remind me of a song called: "Baby come back" by Player. Not same style as "spirit in the sky" but a classic all the same.

I know that song - it was good, I was in a band and we played it.
