1206014 2011-06-01 02:19:00 Have just installed OpenOffice 3.3.0 from the April 2011 PC World DVD and find the spell check will not work. I am very familiar with OO but checking through the options all seems to be turned on.

Would appreciate any suggestions please as to how to fix this.

1206015 2011-06-01 02:53:00 When the dictionary is not recognised by OOo, (no check mark against the language) you cannot use the spellchecker, (When you click on ABC, it always comes to say there is no spelling mistakes even when you know there is) The problem is this, although in the installation files, OOo has skipped by the file and not loaded the dictionary properly. So with a little searching about, I worked out how to get OOo to recognise the file and be able to use the spellchecker as it should be used.

For anyone who would like to know how I got there, here it is...

1) Find the extracted Installation file when you downloaded from the web site (desktop for me but yours may be different).
2) Open the folder and locate the openofficeorg1 file (right click/open)
3) Locate the file "dic_en " right click and extract to the desktop
4) Open OOo and then Text Document, then open Tools/Extension Manager
5) Click on the Add button and then navigate to the desktop to open the "dic_en" file
6) Close OOo(to save the changes), then reopen, reopen Text Document
7) Ctrl and F11, click on Modify and you should find the dictionary in the correct location with check mark against it.

1206016 2011-06-01 09:50:00 Many thanks for your reply, unfortunately there is no dic_en file in the extracted file list. Will try and find a dictionary file on line and try and add it. The OpenOffice terminology takes a bit of understanding. Geep (10664)
1206017 2011-06-01 21:00:00 Ok, then download the dictionary first. pctek (84)
1206018 2011-06-02 05:23:00 I don't have OpenOffice installed myself but sent the following information to someone experiencing the same problem earlier this week . Not sure which solution worked for him but he said he tried the easiest option .

Use either USA English or UK English by:

start writer -> tools -> options -> Language Settings -> Languages -> Default languages for documents -> western -> pick either English (UK) or English (USA) -> OK -> restart openoffice .

A more “correct” way of doing it is to install the correct dictionary by:

start writer -> file ->wizards -> install new dictionaries -> English -> start dicOOo button -> English -> next -> retrieve the list -> English (Australia) -> (repeat for hyphenation dictionaries and thesaurus dictionaries -> next (to start the download) -> finish -> restart OOo

In the word processor, go to Tools>Options>Language Settings>Writing Aids and check that the Hunspell SpellChecker is ticked, otherwise when you run the spell checker it will not pick up any mistakes .

Tools>Options>Language Settings>Languages and select the dictionary you want . If the dictionary is not installed, download it from Dictionaries or go to the OpenOffice Welcome Screen and select Tools>Extension Manager>Get More Extensions online . Once you've downloaded the files you need, in the Extension Manager click Add, find the downloaded files . If you are doing multiple downloads select one file at a time and click Open . On the next screen select whether it is for all users or just yourself, read and accept the licence agreement and the file will then be added to your installation .

Check Format>Paragraph>Font tab and Format>Character>Font tab to make sure there is the little ABC? check mark in front of the language (which means that the dictionary is installed) .

Note that if one of these does work it MAY not find spelling errors in your current documents but will in new documents . The easiest way to fix this is to copy your document and paste it into a new document . Hopefully this will not be necessary .

1206019 2011-06-02 10:05:00 Thanks for all the comments, especially FoxyMX. All I had to do was select a version of English that had a dictionary already installed and fortunately English UK was one of these. One click and now all is well. The fonts are at Format -> character in the version of OO from the April PC World disk. Geep (10664)
