1174374 2011-02-09 03:16:00 But anyway, why the restrictions on gaming, etc? This is the first ive heard of such restrictions in university dorms . . . ive spoken to people who have lived in dorms in Singapore, America, etc and they have no such restrictions in place . If you **** up your studies, the university is more than happy to take more course fees from you if you need to delay your graduation . And i think its silly that you are not allowed to game or watch videos on your time off, which should be YOUR time off .

One reason is because foreign parents who pay unsubsidised education for their children get pissed off and at times they have reached front page news overseas .

They say the school and staff don't look after their children .

I don't know how the nature of a university is checked . But for a smaller school, they check your attendance when you log into the computer or as you come into the building with your swipe card . If you go home early or skip class it raises a flag . But the same restriction does not apply to domestic students .

I guess a uni may check your assessment completions like assignments/projects .

1174375 2011-02-09 14:59:00 Notice boards....where? Question (15792)
1174376 2011-02-09 19:41:00 Noticeboards are in the corridors of the university campus (inside). Students put them up, if you are interested pull a tag which has address and ph number .....
Hence why it might be difficult you might need temp accomodation like home stay or at a motel until you find something.

I am not sure if they advertise it so much when classes has not begun yet. I mean the students are not even in Auckland yet (much of them).

I have no idea if on the net or what .. you might try
www.trademe.co.nz

And maybe,
www.varsity.co.nz

These people are part of Auckland uni, they might have a database of private landlords who contact them .. not sure if AKL does. You might want to email them.
www.accommodation.auckland.ac.nz

Or else this

1174377 2011-02-09 20:39:00 In a student city you may have all your house mates are students. But in a city like Auckland, students are just the minority :D I had a workmate who used to share an apartment with a uni student.... Nomad (952)
1174378 2011-02-10 06:34:00 Ah thanks.

What are typical meals in new zealand, and do you have any idea how much they would cost, at say, a university food court?

Are there any more ISPs that you can recommend as well? Taking a look at Whoosh, they have a 30gb/month plan for $99.
Question (15792)
1174379 2011-02-10 10:11:00 Oh telecom NZ has a 40gb plan for $80, and a 20GB one for $60. Question (15792)
1174380 2011-02-10 10:23:00 Woosh is wireless - that is why it is more expensive (the prices you quoted). They do have ADSL as well, but heard they are not the best ISP, prices are more similar to Telecom's +/-.

Telecom - the prices you note would be ADSL I think. Telecom I think might have WIFI I think still but would be more expensive, and limited areas of reception. There is always 3G cellular. For 3G cellular, see 2 Degrees but you cannot use it when you travel out of Auckland like a holiday away. They only have towers in the main centres, cos they roam off Vodafone so they cost $6 for the first 50MB then it's more there after.

www.2degreesmobile.co.nz

If you want Telecom 3G - they and Vodafone are more expensive (in the main cities).

Pretty much just Orcon for ADSL if you are a medium to a higher user. Pretty good I hear.
orcon.net.nz

I am a lowish user and I like actrix.co.nz. Very good, I have them, voted the beset ISP for the last few years.

Typical meals in NZ cost like $6 - $12 like foodcourts. The $6 meals are there but you need to look for them, they usually have them like lunch specials. My experience say that foodcourts might not get $6 meals, for those you need to look at restaurants like Indian Tolsi if Auckland have them, but they always try to upsell it with meat or add various other stuff like drinks and stuff ... :D Foodcourts tend to just be colluded pricetags - everyone pretty much charge similar prices .... and foodcourts are convenient and get together meeting places.

No idea what student meals cost these days but in my experience in the early 2000s the serviing sides are smaller, at a similar cost of $6-8 (now) I guess.

I guess dinner will be more expensive - because the lunch specials are gone and that generally dinner is just a more pricey affair. Maybe $12 at food courts.

Foodcourts can be Asian, ie., take a plate and pile it all on just don't spill it. To your curries with rice and breads, McD, Burger King, subway is like $4 for the sub of the day special or else $6 I think, the foot long is like $10-12 I think.

Typical dinner places would probably cost up to $25 for a steak meal I guess, a glass of wine $8
Some places have earlier meal times which are cheaper - 3 course which tend to cost like $45, much cheaper than their usual menu's of $80-90'ish. The cheaper option also has cheaper cuts of meats too etc ..

Unlike Singapore, people tend to cook more at home generally speaking. They do go out and eat but eating out is not a everyday affair.
Nope you won't find cheap hawker centres or MRT prices in NZ :D

Looking for a quick meal - a pie or a sandwich tend to cost like $3-4 I guess. Toasted panini maybe $6. Some higher places might cost $6 I guess or panini $12 ...
Coffee or tea or soda, I guess $2-2.50.

1174381 2011-02-10 10:38:00 But if you want lattes, flat-whites, capuccinos or fancy teas maybe an avg of $4. You might find some at $3.50 if you look around. Nomad (952)
1174382 2011-02-10 11:02:00 Oh telecom NZ has a 40gb plan for $80, and a 20GB one for $60.

This is ADSL. Don't forget for any ADSL connections you need to add ~$40 a month for a phone line rental.

You can get Naked ADSL (cannot use a std phone) but the thing, taking your example it's not just $80 or $60, assuming those (2) plans are both FS/FS - full speed both up and downstream. Approx., Naked ADSL still charge you $20 a month. They just make Naked ADSL plans of 40GB costing $100 a month instead (!). I think you can be given a local ph number and you use a VOIP to dial no.'s. Also remember that by using VOIP, might not be all ISPs, dunno, when you make ph calls you will be using your data. A normal phone won't.

www.orcon.net.nz
For example a N-ADSL 25GB cost $80 a month.
More GBs are available ....

Obviously 3G cellular or Woosh wireless won't need it.

A tip - to call Singapore or Asia cheaply and probably other cards for other countries - go to the Asian supermarkets/convenience stores you can get those calling cards - like Chi-Tel or Compass. Cheaper than using Telecom or whoever to dial.

1174383 2011-02-10 11:33:00 Whoah, i had no idea food in NZ was that expensive. I actually thought Singapore was more expensive food wise, since anything that is not heavily rice/noodles based is very expensive(such as burgers). My friends in america tell me that food is really cheap there(Can easily get 2 cheese burgers for $2 for example), and since NZ produces a lot of meat, i thought it would be about the same.

For the internet thing...how do i calculate the final cost then? For example, i probably wont need a standard phone line while im there, so my best option would be naked ADSL? Orcon for example lists a 25GB for $80/month naked ADSL plan...would that be the final $80/month, or are there some more "hidden" charges?

Also, is anyone here familiar with the xnet ISP? I cant seem to find any pricing info on their site, other than "prices start at $1.28 per GB".

For mobile phone usage, i suppose my cheapest option for within NZ calls would be phone cards as well?
