2011-02-03 05:02:00 | LOL. You're kidding right? Theres a large umbrella ornament in your main st, you think that is because it's known for sun? In the 4 years we lived in Southland I saw it's usual weather - wind, rain, cold. In summer. In Winter it changed to wind, frost and hail, cold. The umbrella you are talking about is too large to cart around to keep the sun off. Mayor Tim will not let anybody borrow it in any case. We are a hardy lot in Southland.

2011-02-03 05:05:00 | We have never been much into gardening, that was until around October last year SWMBO decided it was time. :wub Muggins here had to clear a patch in the back yard - The Tomatoes started off real slow, then all of a sudden they took off. Loads now, some are turning red, some have been picked already, LOTS of green ones. Lettuces went good, to many to eat :) Beetroot - they took of as well. Carrots - almost ready. We have had some smaller ones already :drool Strawberries - got a few, but decided to try getting more plants from the runners - thats working well so far. Planted some beans about a week and a half ago to see what would happen -- they have suddenly shot up. Few other plants we are experimenting with - could be "fun". Broccoli - suddenly took off. There is so much difference between your own and the rubbish brought at the shops :yuck: Even the boy who doesn't like veggies, is eating them.

2011-02-03 18:50:00 | What tomato cultivars are people growing? I'm growing Black Krim and Brandywine pink. Haven't tried the Brandywine ones yet but the Black Krim ones were very tasty. | Sam's Dad (11848) | |
2011-02-03 19:15:00 | Well the climbing beans are almost over we grew purple coloured ones, beetroot, cucumbers, zucchini, pumpkin, spuds, Maori spud (blue all through), lettuce, leeks, and then there is the fruit, new apple trees, new plum tree, strawbs, boysenberries, raspberries and of course rhubarb. Sure I have forgotten stuff as well our garden is overflowing and the freezer is full

2011-02-03 19:26:00 | just some more questions :D do you guys need to invest in new soil, and various nutrients be it spray or slow release pebbles etc .. or is it pretty much plant in season and water and new soil.

2011-02-03 19:49:00 | We are organic, no chemicals at all, just our own compost and blood & bone for fertiliser. SWMBO did go for the no dig method though which makes life a bit easier for me as I can't dig it leaves me in excruciating pain in my shoulder | gary67 (56) | |
2011-02-03 21:06:00 | just some more questions :D do you guys need to invest in new soil, and various nutrients be it spray or slow release pebbles etc .. or is it pretty much plant in season and water and new soil. We live on a newish subdivision, so the developers have scraped off the topsoil and presumably sold it to other people who have just moved into new subdivisions. As this is an earthquake liquefaction zone, they have pounded the earth to compact it so it is a nightmare to dig (and it is on an old alluvial plain, so there are lots of stones). So I have had to dig to plant the fruit trees, but for vege gardens I have either built or bought kitset raised gardens. I now have 6 beds, an average of 2m x 1m each. I bought trailer loads of garden mix from the local landscape supplies to fill the gardens - it is a mix of mushroom compost, screened topsoil and their own compost. I have added our own compost to the mix. The only spray I have used has been copper oxychloride to kill leaf curl on one of the peach trees. I have also used Neem oil to slow the aphids down at the beginning of the season before the ladybirds got going. I have netting over the garden beds to keep out the cabbage white butterflies, and the chooks.

2011-02-03 21:09:00 | I have one eggplant in the greenhouse that has four fruit on it - the typical huge purple aubergine. How do you know when an aubergine is ripe to pick? | John H (8) | |
2011-02-03 23:06:00 | What tomato cultivars are people growing? . I had some Sweet 100 in. Damn things are history, massive powdery mildew infestation now. Other than that I keep seeds from the Beekist varieties. Current favorite is Love Bite.

2011-02-05 00:27:00 | Rather, than start a new thread, I thought about putting it here .. I bought some brocoli seeds. It's not the Shotgun variety, just the De Cicco as it was cheaper and it's my first project. It has 100 seeds, I only need a couple right? First, I need to put it indoors in a small container, do I just add compost that 20kg stuff from Bunnings? I also have a smaller bag of blood/bones - is that required too? A question out of curiosity, some say brocoli is a winter vegetable but some say it cannot be grown in the heart of winter - who's right? If it goes well I may get into snow peas for winter :p
