1173701 2011-01-31 09:55:00 Never understood why people say the supermarkets are the ones ripping us off when all they are doing is their usual mark up (normally double) on what they pay for things. If you still think that's a rip off, consider how much waste they go through. A lot.

Well, if other home growers' tomatoes are ripening like ours are, there will be a lot more waste as people refuse to pay $4 to $5 a kg for the tasteless rubbish the supermarkets and greengrocers are selling right now.

1173702 2011-01-31 11:01:00 newbie question, do they need to be planted every year?

any that don't?
:thanks

:pf1mobmini:

They are not perennial if that's what you mean.

Perhaps this will help you:-

Based on your record I would suggest you don't plant any seeds. :)

Killing tomatoes is easier than killing parsley.

1173703 2011-01-31 11:17:00 That said, if you have good soil and moisture content, and a few tomatoes fall into the garden and don't get picked up, there is a high chance that you will get an inadvertent crop the next year (provided the birds don't get at the seeds).... johcar (6283)

.

Actually, originally, in their native country, they were.

The plant will die if temperatures dip below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

Then grow it yourself and don't buy from them. Simple

I used to work in tomato houses in the school hols. My employer used to take his trailer to the local sewage farm and fill it from the dry piles of sewage farm output for use as compost in the tomato houses (this is the early 1960's - things were different then...).

There were many very vigorous tomato plants growing in the piles from seeds that had (ahem) made their way through the digestive systems of the local populace. It was interesting working in the tomato houses, because of all the things I would find around the roots of the plants that had not been digested by the sewage processing. I am sure you can work out what a lot of them were... I assume that OSH put the kibosh on this sort of carry on!

As the tomato plants die every year they are NOT perennial!

1173708 2011-01-31 22:44:00 Let me guess. Small. Round. Rubber.

We used to get compost years ago from the North Shore Water Treatment plant (aka the "poo ponds") in Rosedale Road.

Great for the garden, but, as you say, lots of 'extraneous, non-biodgradeable matter'

Usually unfurled and knotted, so no longer small and round! Plus teaspoons and small children's toys.

The link worked for me without all the rubbish you retrieved. Must be something problematic at your end.
