1174445 2011-02-01 22:52:00 I would say about 90% of users run a version of IE.
:)

Recent studies show Firefox has around 20 -> 25% of the browser market, Chrome has around 10, Opera around 3-5 and Safari also around 3-5 if my memory serves me correctly. That leaves around 60 -> 65% running IE. A definite monopoly, but certainly not 90% ;)

EDIT: Just found this: arstechnica.com

1174446 2011-02-01 22:53:00 The only problem I have with IE these days is that it's slow. Slow to start up, slow to load anything. I haven't used IE9 yet though. Siobhan Keogh (16063)
1174447 2011-02-01 22:55:00 It's not only the security concerns that are raised almost every week (it seems) about IE, but I have found many instances of web pages not rendering properly in IE (when they were fine in any other browser).

I even had one site (owned by a friend) repaired by a PF1 member, because the original developers had written it for IE7 or above, so it wouldn't display properly in the corporate IE6 browsers that were still being used (and probably still are) around the country.

Although it's improving, M$ still seem to use their own standards for HTML rendering in IE, rather than the worldwide accepted ones, which causes confusion and hassles and frustration for developers and users alike.

And because it still has a large market share (overall), it will remain a target for criminals and script kiddies for some time to come.

IE9 doesn't seem slow at all - far from it.
Also I think I prefer to use a browser designed by the OS manufacturer (Win 7 64bit) than a third party software you have to tu tu with (i.e. plugins) to make work up to standard!

1174449 2011-02-01 23:13:00 I could care less what others think about IE?

I use it beacause I want to and as a matter of choice.Totally agree with those statements.

These days I use mainly Opera, and IE - IE because many MS sites wont allow the full functions that IE have if you run other browsers.

about IE, but I have found many instances of web pages not rendering properly in IE (when they were fine in any other browser). I have found the opposite -- there are many times over the last six months, Firefox has turned to utter crap - it crashes, so called updates mange to always break something - I'm talking about customers Computers as well as our own.

Firefox on our PC's here only gets used for the odd site these days - there are a lot better and faster browsers about. For Example opera loads up PF1 at least double the speed of FF.

I use Chrome as my primary browser - anything that ABSOLUTELY NEEDS IE, I open in the IE Tab extension. But many M$ pages seem to be less fussy than they used to be...

I have given up on FF (for the moment) as it is so damn slow to open - although it probably doesn't help that I have a dozen or so add-ons that check for updates when I open that browser - I only really have it still installed so I can do compatibility testing with some of the sites I maintain.

In fact, I have the 5 main browsers installed for that purpose, but my preference is for the Google offering.

1174452 2011-02-01 23:29:00 FF and Opera seem to have probs with this forum. I got rid of FF because when you create links in a post, it wouldnt shorten it (it always showed the full link that you pasted). It'll work, if you edit then try again

In Opera, when you create a link it works fine. But if you go to edit your thread / post, you dont get advanced edit (like you used to).

1174453 2011-02-01 23:39:00 Has Firefox fixed their memory leak problem? That made it not worth using for a while there. Siobhan Keogh (16063)
1174454 2011-02-01 23:42:00 I was a Firefox fan until Internet Explorer 9 beta came along and I decided to give it a go. I have been using IE 9 ever since with no problems. I am not in a hurry to go back to Firefox. Bobh (5192)
