1174344 2011-02-02 21:34:00 Well NZs most hated man Philip Alphers was always spouting we had more guns (handguns not included) per person than USA and about the same long gun ownership as Finland. I guess none one really knows because they havent been taking details of make model and serial number since the Gray incident. I have 9 at the moment. I have mates with walk in rifle sheds.
No wonder he is now hiding in Australia.

It's a few years out of date but we rank 22nd for gun ownership, I have heard people claim us as the highest before but I think it's just one of those silly rumours that goes around.

If you consider we are a farming based economy and almost every farmer owns a gun the actual rate for the rest of us must be fairly low. Plus handguns are hard to come by here and can't be legally carried around, generally restricted to gun clubs and collectors.

Most farmers own more than one gun, need say 22 for killing small stuff and a bigger calibre for killing big animals.

1174347 2011-02-03 16:58:00 Incidentally, whats internet in new zealand like? The only description ive gotten from new zealanders so far is "shitty" and that there are low caps everywhere.

I will be living in a university dorm, and im not sure what kind of internet access will be available, gotta check on that, but i doubt its going to be unlimited.

University of auckland seems to give you a 100 MB cap for any non university website, and charges you $2 for an extra 100mb after. Thats 10 times worse as compared to canada's $2 for 1GB, which is a huge news item now.

Ironically, paying someone in america to buy an external HDD, ship it across the ocean with the files you want, and throwing it away afterwards would be cheaper than paying $2 for 100mb...

Well welcome to NZ.

If you are a higher volume user, look at Orcon at a good price. 20GB or higher incl up/down stream.
orcon.net.nz

If you are a lesser user look at Actrix at a good price. 20GB or lesser.
actrix.co.nz

If you cannot get ADSL wiring look at 3G connection with 2 Degrees.
www.2degreesmobile.co.nz
They only work in the main centres as the following because they don't have towers everywhere in NZ yet:
www.2degreesmobile.co.nz

If you are outside of it you will be paying the casual rate of $6 for 50MB then it's higher I think.

In NZ ADSL is more popular and cheaper, it's the other way round to Singapore. In NZ, there is no such thing as unlimited usage, they used to have it but they failed 2x.

If you want no caps you just pay for every excess usage or you can be capped at dial-up speed and pay no more.

Some are university dorms in a main building, some dorms also have university flats (individual houses) maintained by that same arm.
You have to check with the place you are staying at. If you are with the flats, normally you can assume you have access to ADSL2+ (see above). If you are staying in a Halls of Residence or a University Flat, I am not sure how that would work out because usually the phone connection is arranged thru their office than directly with Telecom NZ.

You talk about Internet being provided at university. I am not sure how they work now, but I was at Otago University many years ago and they didn't have caps. They however only provided you are a HTTP and HTTPS so it was for work/study only. You didn't have access to a SOCK server for chatting or gaming (under the student network). We didn't have data caps but won't be surprised if they introduced that now. The thing with the student network is that if the network gets busy in the day time, it will be slow where you are at home as well.

Check with your residence, if you staying at a University Flat or Halls or Residence they might have a network jack in your room that connects you to the student network.

Is that from a Canadian University?

If you are purchasing it from Telecom NZ (the equiv. to SingTel), they have many ISPs that can on sell Internet to you. Some ISPs charge $2NZ per GB, a few charge $1/GB - like xnet.co.nz but they not that great I heard.

No, apparently, major canadian ISPs decided to force through some bill that lets them charge $2 per GB and cease unlimited bandwidth usage. Im not too sure on the exact detals, but a lot of canadians are in an uproar about it, becausei ts cheaper to buy SSDs and throw them away then pay $2 per GB.

Isnt NZ in the middle of some kind of network infrastructure upgrade though?
Question (15792)
1174353 2011-02-04 04:45:00 But a cap of 20gb per month seems really dissapointing though. I thought NZ was like 80 and Australia was like 200gb for caps. 20gb a month is like...occasional gaming and surfing. One movie probably pushes you right over the edge, and forgot anything in high definition.

Whats the big obstacle? Poor network infrastructure? Even Singapore can get unlimited broadband, and we are not exactly known for world class internet(on peak hour usage, torrents slow down to 5 kb/s for a conncetion advertised at 30 mbps).
