| 1205574 | 2011-05-29 10:26:00 | I have been asked to look at my stepdaughters computer which has now wont boot It is a HP Pavillion s3660a slimline desktop pc with Intel core 2 Duo cpu It apparently shutdown on its own and now wont boot, it powers up but no video or beeps. I took it apart and found the heatsink and fan choked with dust. Have stripped machine down to motherboard and CPU but still no go first thought was CPU failure due to overheating but have discovered motherboard is a Foxconn Irvine board which according to a google search have a history of failure. So my question is do I get a new CPU or order a motherboard off ebay, I suspect a board from HP would be more than the machine is worth Thanks in advance |

Someone always does so I'll mention capacitors, have a look and see if any are bulging or show signs of leakage. They are a common source of failures on older motherboards, although some people seem to target them as the likely cause of all hardware faults. The sad truth is though with an older pc and no spare parts to swap around you have limited options if you can't get it to POST, replacing parts is a bit of a shot in the dark. It may be better to fnd a computer store with a good rep and take it in, they are more likely to be able to isolate the cause. Don't give them free reign though, get a firm quote to prove the fault or give them a price limit and hold them to it. |

Unfortunately, slimeline/sff often have non standard power supplies sometimes even have non standard connectors(even HP !!) making in impossible to test without buying a new COSTLY OEM power supply. most common power on faults: PSU, m/b, cables+cards, CPU : in that order Intel CPU'S hardly ever fail. If the m/b is faulty, seriously consider it a write off & save some yourself major grief , wasted cash & wasted time. |

We got a batch of HP 6200's, damn nice PC, but the PSU....the HDD's plug into the system board for power. |

| 1205581 | 2011-05-30 11:02:00 | Hi Thanks for the advice offered the machine is out of warranty so its up to me to fix it or junk it Will try the CMOS battery idea, have tried everything else I can think of The capacitors all appear ok, no obvious signs of bulging, the psu uses a non std connector (bloody HP) so cant swap it for another I have found replacement motherboards on EBay for about $80 USD so thought this might worth a go, just wanted to see if I could rule out CPU failure first With Thanks |
